Glad he goes there, and not, for example, Chicago. No history with them.

We couldn't renew his contract and sell him to Miami for say, 100K?
Oh well, I'm not a GM... but apparently Hamlett isn't one either.

Hamlett is, BY FAR, the worst GM/Sporting Director in club history (sad as this list includes Stillitano, Sakiewicz, Lalas, Agoos, etc...)

He was facing free agency, why would he agree to that? If I'm him, financially, anything less than a high salary multi year deal from us wouldn't make sense.

Nope, Hamlett didn't pick up his option. (As opposed to BWP, who was out of contract.)
The Red Bulls have declined the option on goalkeeper Luis Robles. Robles is eligible for MLS free agency.

Luis told SiriusXM that he told Denis to decline his option. Figured he wasnt in the teams plans going forward

so they helped him and showed him respect by declining the option and allowing him to be a free agent?
Also saving some $$$ if the plan was to transition to Meara as #1

Boricuas down there to embrace their half cousin.
IIRC, Luis has stated that he does not speak Spanish.
We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

"As we got toward the end, Denis [Hamlett] called me, Chris [Armas] called me before the day that they announced it and we talked about a bunch of different scenarios and none of those scenarios included me continuing to play for the team," Robles said.
"So at that point, I said 'thank you, I appreciate everything that you guys have allowed me to do. And if it's OK with you, I just ask that you don't explore too many other options in just letting me go. I thought Denis did me a solid by just letting me go because it was going to give me the best chance in deciding where I could go. I really was grateful to him."
So Hamlett did him a favor. Good move as a human. Bad move as a GM.
(Ali would have never made that mistake -- he is not human.)

In light of that, Im ok with him not holding out for some GAM/TAM; weve thrown a lot of guys away in crap ways. Giving Luis his wish is a fair payback for his years of service on & off the field.
Wed over pay some rb salzburg loan cast off with that gam/tam money anyway
