MLS teams won't take it that seriously.

RB does not even take Open Cup seriously.
Our run to the final was a fluke.
Especially the win at Cincy.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

They took it seriously that year though, we had a good lineup in Cincinnati with a lot of starters playing when Marsch was here.

I was at every game, look at the lineups for each game in the links you posted, they took it seriously.

I was at every game as well.
More seriously than other years perhaps, but that is not saying much. Ultimately progressed on luck and a few timely subs. I felt that we were going to loose in each game.
A rebound against NYC saved us from PKs.
We went to PKs against PU, yet prevailed.
Red card vs. NE provided the edge for BWP.
Fortuitous pounce by Veron, genius by BWP at FCC.
Then, we ran into a club that really takes it seriously.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

You can take something serious AND be lucky.

You can take something serious AND be lucky.

Almost every single-elimination tournament winner had some luck along the way.  Its the nature of the beast.

In our case, we need more than both!
Or, we have never been serious enough or lucky enough.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

You are rarely going to win one of those tournaments without some luck... And with Marsch we didn't even need to play our starters(even though we did) because he's get the backups playing just as well.

You cant win a tourney without some luck. You absolutely cannot win it with BAD luck.

At this point, it may require Divine Intervention.

Luck doesnt miraculously appear.

Rbny created their own luck by playing starters in the open cup. This should always be the standard. We should never go back to the backe and petke years where they played scrubs or decided not to travel with the team.

Others complain that overuse of starters comes back to haunt us in the playoffs. If the roster is not deep enough to field top lineups in both competitions, team may decide to sacrifice the OC for the league. Now, with this third competition, the players will be stretched further.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I would rather we play the B/C team every year for the open cup.

While I respect the history of the tournament I just dont get excited about it. At all. Id rather see the depth of our program get tested and see if theres a guy who steps up and can really be counted on for the stretch run.

That is nonsense. They can play with the back ups in league play and win. One loss in open cup eliminates the team from the competition. One or two losses in league play is not that big of a hit since you can still qualify for the playoffs.
