2010 FIFA World Cup

Posted Image

I'm quite late to post the draw and schedule, but what the hell, I'm bored at the moment. Feel free to discuss this summer's upcoming FIFA World Cup. Perhaps post your predictions in a super neat and anal way like I do or super sloppy and cluttered to the point where we can't event follow you. Then there is ... whatever else. Most likely a lot of bitching and debating so feel free to get things underway! Excuse me while I post more consecutive replies to complete this because this fucked forum still has the rule of only posting up to ten images at a time.

I believe that the US has a pretty good chance of at least making it out of the group stage. After that, probably not much will happen...

I'm gonna be rooting for France as well (regardless of how they got here) but I'm not expecting too much from them either. So much talent but coach that should have been let go a long time ago. Looks like he's going to be given one (hopefully) last chance to run the team into the ground. It's going to be sad. :(

On a more positive note, I'm hoping that the African nations have a good tournament, if only for a change of pace.

I went from being gung-ho for Mexico to worried to back to excited about their chances. I guess, I'll see how it does in it's friendlies and how it handles England, the dutch and senegal. But I'm optimistic about them making the round of 16 and then anything can happen.

For the US, they could do anything from bomb out to making the 1/4s again. You never know with this team.

Gut tells me that the 3 concacaf teams will advance into final 16....after that, no clue. Gut also tells me that Maradona will say/do something stupid.

Here are my predictions. They're a few months old now, but I've revamped them just a bit.

Group A

South Africa
Mexico
Uruguay
France

Analysis
The first match is the most important in this group. South Africa will be lucky to get a draw out of any of their three matches, but if they manage to beat Mexico by some chance, they will have some high confidence coming into their second match against Uruguay, which could be vital in their survival into the knockout stage. France are not one of my favorites, but they should make it through without too much trouble aside from Mexico. Mexico could win the group the way they've been playing under Javier Aguirre. They are my top choice for the group. Uruguay are a team I'd like to see through, but they haven't been consistent through their qualification in CONMEBOL. They have a shot, but they need to pick it up when it counts the most.

Group B

Argentina
Nigeria
Korea Republic
Greece

Analysis
Argentina have been given a gift here to be honest. Under Maradona, I can't see them doing much once they reach the knockout stages. They haven't been impressive at all through qualification. The second spot will be a toss up in my honest opinion. As of right now, I'm looking at Nigeria to make it through, but I don't want to count out Korea Republic or Greece. Nigeria are a fairly strong African nation and they do have some great players to choose from. Remember that they did take down Tunisia, a team that has in recent years solidified themselves as World Cup regulars. Korea Republic looked strong in AFC qualification and have a strong looking team capable of winning in this group. I'm not sure how well they can play in Africa though. Greece played well down the stretch of their qualification in UEFA and stand a chance to pull it out.

Group C

England
United States of America
Algeria
Slovenia

Analysis
England should make it through to the knockout stage. I have very little doubt. The United States could pose a threat to England's group dominance however and could possibly surprise them in the opening match in Rustenburg with a draw or possibly even a win. Let us not forget the Confederations Cup. If the United States do not manage something positive against England, Slovenia took out a strong Russian side and may pose a big threat. They open against Algeria and will likely win that match on a high note. With three points in the bag and their next match against an American team possibly coming off of a devastating loss, they could make it through without much trouble. I am happy that Algeria has made it through over Egypt, but honestly I can't see them doing much.

Group D

Germany
Australia
Serbia
Ghana

Analysis
Germany should make it through with nine points. They are one of my favorites to win the World Cup in the Summer. Ghana and Serbia are my choices to fight it out for second place in this group. Both teams have been incredible through qualification, but I see the European nation edging through. Serbia looks strong in every position with a lot of new faces that weren't there in 2006 for Serbia and Montenegro. Australia played well through their qualification in the AFC, but I can't see them being able to earn a victory against these other nations.

Group E

Netherlands
Denmark
Japan
Cameroon

Analysis
The Netherlands are one of my top choices to win the World Cup in the Summer. They should get through with all nine points. Denmark will do their best to take second, but Cameroon are one of my teams to make it far into the knockout stages. Call it a hunch at best. Japan should do alright, but they'll be lucky to get a win. I think two draws seems most likely.

Group F

Italy
Paraguay
New Zealand
Slovakia

Analysis
I'm sorry in advance to the defending World Champions, but I can't see Italy going through. They aren't anywhere as strong as they were three years ago and their team will be even weaker come this Summer. Paraguay have shown that they are becoming a force in CONMEBOL. They should get through by winning the group. Slovakia are a new face, though this is their first World Cup as an independent nation their team is revamped and looking very good. They should get through in second place unless Italy surprise me big time. New Zealand will suffer against all three opposition.

Group G

Brazil
Korea DPR
Côte d'Ivoire
Portugal

Analysis
Everyone is talking about Brazil, yet again, and I'm still not that impressed. They still have holes in the back. If Portugal bring the team they have now, they won't survive the group stage. Korea DPR could surprise a few teams, even Brazil. I don't think they stand a chance of making it through, but they could do some surprising damage that will see our predictions going haywire. Côte d'Ivoire are my choice to make it through, though I can't say whether or not they will win the group, They definitely stand a strong chance. This is the group of death.

Group H

Spain
Switzerland
Honduras
Chile

Analysis
Spain may have lost out in the Confederations Cup, but some people seem to forget about EURO 2008. They're one of the three strongest European squads right now. They have impressive players in every position and look to be a force this World Cup. Expect them to win their group with all nine points. Chile will come through in second. They are a team for the future along with Slovenia and Belgium in my honest opinion. They have a strong team and a good mix of incredible youth and solid veterans. They will be even stronger in the Summer. Honduras and Switzerland will fight it out for third.

Knockout Stage
Here is where the predictions become all the more difficult. We all know how this round works where the winner of one group will face the runners-up of another group. My predictions may change obviously as we get closer to the start of the World Cup in 2010.

Round of 16
Mexico over Nigeria
France over Argentina

England over Serbia
Germany over Slovenia

Netherlands over Slovakia
Cameroon over Paraguay

Brazil over Chile
Spain over Côte d'Ivoire

Quarter-finals
France over Mexico
Germany over England

Netherlands over Cameroon
Spain over Brazil

Semi-finals
Germany over France
Netherlands over Spain

Final
Netherlands over Germany

Third place
Spain over France

No problem man. I'm waiting for some more opinions to see if I should post up all of the teams in my graphics portfolio thread.

I interned in the FO for a little while and trust me they are so dumb had they payed off the refs they probably would have presented them one of those huge checks during halftime on the field.

I've gone back to almost a full out worry, for several reasons some injuries and lack of pt for everyone in Europe. It's almost funny how the US and MNT have the same problems. Injuries and the lack of that playing time for each countries players might have a hindering effect on who each do in chase for the cup. On a side note, whoever is hosting the Mexico games better start broadcasting in HD, i'm tired of squinting to try to determine if someone is flopping or if they actually got fouled.

I'm less worried about our European based players now that Lubos Kubic is the USMNT's European based coach. I trust him to do a fine job working with the players and helping Bradley make the right decisions.

Would that be to stop starting Brad Ching and leaving Jozy on the Bench???
