Player that have to go:

Luquinhas - Unless he can find his shot, he's not good enough.
Barlow
D. Nealis
Yearwood
Burke - Could keep as depth.
Manoel - Wouldn't have an issue if he stayed and played with the IIs.
Carmona - See Manoel comment.

Players to keep:

Amaya - Only as depth, not a starter.
Donkor - Keep as bench/depth option.
Duncan - Not a bad backup.
Edelman
Fernandez - Keep as bench/depth option.
Harper
Morgan - Assuming he gets fit.
Ndam - No issue if he goes, but ok with him as a backup.
S. Nealis
Ngoma - Assuming he can get fit.
Nocita
Reyes
Stroud
Vanzeir - Too soon to give up on, the time missed this year and whole debacle probably have set him back.
Tolkin - I wish

Goalies (I don't know what to do here):

Carlos Coronel - Hasn't been great, but is that the pressure of knowing we aren't scoring and he has to be perfect?
AJ Marcucci - Is he ready for prime time?
Meara - Is it a Red Bull NY team w/o Meara on the bench?

Burke still has another year on contract, Manoel would need to be loaned or sold.

Amaya probably still starting next season with Edelman

Reid is an easy cut

If they need the supplemental/reserve roster spots for other players then Carmona and Nocita are fairly easy cuts, neither has shown much of anything.

Not ready to make my full list yet, but I'm not sure I'm on board with the bolded departures here.

  • Luqui I think you hold to until you need the DP spot. He's not a playmaker but he's still one of the team's better players. I'd rather sign a legit playmaker to play with him instead of replacing him.
  • Dylan Nealis had a good enough year before the injury that I like him as a versatile depth player
  • Burke and Manoel I'd be OK with as 3rd and 4th options behind a new DP partner for Vanzeir.

Still believe the team doesn't need a total overhaul, just need to get the top end of the roster right. Buy Luqui down to a TAM contract, fill the two remaining DP spots with another striker and an attacking midfielder. The rest of the squad is solid.

Luquinhas shows flashes at times, but they are so far in between. He disappears from games. I don't see how you can have an attacking midfielder DP with 0 assists and 1 goal.. on a rebound.

I'm convinced Luquinhas is actually a #8 that people mistook for a #10 because he's Brazilian. I'd love to see the coaching staff model the Felipe/Dax pairing and get Luquinhas next to a ball-winner, Edelman probably being the best fit of the current group. Put an actual playmaker ahead of him. But that's just me going full armchair manager.

If push came to shove and we needed the DP spot, then yeah he's gotta go.

Of course, we don't need a DP spot, because we are who we are.

Barlow is the only clear cut. In fact as a STH I would volunteer to pay extra next year just to have his contract bought out and never have to see him again

If I was Barlow I'd want a new start too... maybe on a non-press team he gets time as a "protect a lead" substitute forward.

Feel like he was probably let down by shitty coaches in his youth - they probably allowed him to rely on his size and speed superiority and never worked on striker one touch fundamentals.

Edit - or maybe he just needs contacts.

I'm still hoping for an acquisition in the next 3 days. I know they said no player announcement 8/1, but I don't believe them.

I know this thread has a gallows humor edge to it, but it is too early for me. I mean, any of these guys can earn their spot for 2024 in the next 3 months. There are few locks, sure, but too many questions. I don't feel comfortable writing anyone off with 3 months to play.

I also dont really buy addition by subtraction. Bring in more CAMs, Strikers, and offensive minded players and reorganize depth chart, and get rid of who is surplus. Barlow has real issues, but we'd be playing some games with no striker if he wasnt on the roster. The issue isnt who is ON the roster, its the star players who arent on it.

I wasnt suggesting we dont replace the guys I think should leave.

Problem is the FO brought in DP guys that aren't DPs. Luquinhas is good but he isn't a DP level player. He's more of a  TAM type and hopefully they buy him down. Then you have Vanzeir who could be good but we aren't doing him any favors pairing him with Barlow, burke and Manoel. All 3 should be cut or coming off the bench.

This team doesn't need to many players. Bring in a #10 and a striker that are difference makers then we will be a different team.

We need DPs in our DP slots.  Luqi is not a DP.
