This has been true every season for about 10 years. Makes it hard if you whiff on consecutive DP9 players over 3 years, though.
Sure a whiff, but they are gambling. They are looking for big payout players - relatively young, relatively unproven. Those are the sorts who with a good season can suddenly be worth 3x-10x what you paid for them.

Dante is a "proven" striker. Why his success in Belgium hasn't translated here is a mystery. Is MLS really that much better than the Belgian Pro League?

43 goals in 79 games over there. Scoring a goal at least every other game. I didn't go watch his highlights or anything from over there but maybe his teammates were setting him up for slam dunk easy goals?Dante is a "proven" striker. 43 goals in 79 games over there. Scoring a goal at least every other game. I didn't go watch his highlights or anything from over there but maybe his teammates were setting him up for slam dunk easy goals?
I don't care enough to go watch because no matter how you cut it 5 goals in 20 games here isn't enough.
Dude is an absolute bust so far.
He has not met expectations but I think he needs a little more time to make a judgment about him. He was here for Herr Struber which was disastrous for everyone and the link up play to him has been poor. The miss on frame last night was not good but he has had glimpses of what potentially could be.

He really hasn't played very much; he's 14th on the team in minutes played, and his average appearance length is like, 55 minutes. The goals/game ratio is going to look like shit for almost any striker who's playing that little.

What was Vanziers role for his previous team and is it different than his role here - where he seems to peel out wide or come back as a bit of a false nine. Definitely not an out and out #9.

Not getting enough playing time and not getting enough chances to get into a scoring rhythm and playing next to a soccer black hole are all arguments in favor of why he has not done better. Samething was said about klimala. The difference between vanzier and klimala is that at least klimala sprinted when he pressed. Vanzier doesnt do much on or off the ball.
I think that is not fair to Vanzier at least at this point. Klimala had ample opportunities to score, he just could not do it and could do less with the ball. Were Stuber tactics (or lack thereof) contributory, totally but Klimala was objectively not good here. Vanzier has scored some nice goals and to be fair to him that miss last night was partially to Blake coming out early and having two defenders on his back. It is still no excuse for not forcing the save or getting it on frame. You may be right that they share similarities, but I do think it is a bit premature to make that comparison.
