Barlow hits a shot straight at the keeper, then our last two crosses sail harmlessly out of bounds. Fitting end of the season.

You're right you're right. Can't we just make a losers tourney for them or something?

Call it the Sippy Cup

#1374162 Kaku and Casseres called up for November World Cup Qualifiers

"FIFA did soften its stance somewhat, ruling that players who are required to quarantine by their local government for at least five days can be withheld from international duty without punishment. But since the United States has only issued a recommendation and not a mandate, most players were unaffected."

#1374107 International slot wasted

That thinking is penny wise, pound foolish.  You could end up stuck with a guy that doesn't fit Struber's plan.  The combination of Armas and Hamlett screwed this year.  Give Thelwell AND Struber the offseason to put together a contender for 2021.

This reminds me of the "we're looking for the right fit" stuff that we've heard for 5+ years. Sure, this season is a bit of a write-off, but if we just got a league average striker instead of Barlow, you never know what happens in the playoffs. And if you could sign someone that's better than league average, I'd hope that Struber is a good enough manager to accommodate him in whatever system he's planning on.

They did bring in Yearwood and Tetteh, so clearly it is possible to sign players with a (possible) future here without Struber physically being in the country. Phones and video calls exist in 2020.

Anyway, I dont necessarily disagree with waiting it out, but saying there's "zero reason" to consider alternatives does irk me a bit.

Our grip on 6th place is pretty tenuous at this point.  We're one spot ahead of NE; tied on points with 29, but we get the tiebreaker (which isn't GD I guess since they have a better GD).  The bigger problem may be Nashville, who's in 8th place, one point back with 28.  But they have a game in hand.
I'd say put your strongest lineup out there for the next two games to hold onto 6th place.

Yeah. Playoffs started last night for us.

#1373791 Some people like listening to Shep

I wasnt being completely serious. It is funny to listen to Shep gush about Barlow and Stroud, 2 guys who wouldnt start on a lot of teams in this league.

There's a lot to admire about Barlow's hustle and he's shown flashes of quality with his passing and runs, but he just lacks finishing skills unfortunately.

Their updated data is on their interactive tables - they stopped updating the static tables.

Barlow has the 6th-worst goals to xG total in the league (2 goals scored, 4.4 xG).

White is overperforming xG (2 goals scored, 1.57 xG).

Fbref has expected goals data for MLS now too: https://fbref.com/en...Red-Bulls-Stats

As another proof of poor finishing, Stroud is 4th worst in the league in terms of expected assists (3.2) to actual assists (1). Duncan ranked #21 as well (2.35 and 1, respectively).

#1373188 Valot / Casseres no longer international

Posted by ivo on 14 October 2020 - 12:44 PM

Are we really gonna sit on an open slot THAT WE TRADED FOR?

Muyl addition by subtraction? (700 minutes for Nashville, 0 goals, 0 assists)

Not only that, but international games are usually a better showcase than club games for scouts. Friendlies not so much as tournaments, but still has to hurt not to even get on the field in that scenario.

Yesterday's game was a World Cup qualifier.

#1373144 Some people argue about the offside rule

Posted by ivo on 13 October 2020 - 06:00 PM

Not even close. Guzan dove and reached out in the right direction the moment Clark touched the ball, which is why the two most "experienced" refs in MLS let it stand.

Just one. Marrufo didn't see replays.

And I did say "almost", it's hard to find exact replicas of situations like this. :)

#1373102 Some people argue about the offside rule

Posted by ivo on 12 October 2020 - 11:00 PM

How do you figure? If the rule says that the offside player has to clearly impact the action of the goalkeeper

You're referring to "clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent". Irrelevant because Royer is not trying to play the ball.

Relevant part of the rule is "preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponents line of vision or"

"Clearly obstructing line of vision" is not strictly defined and can be argued either way, imho.

My biggest gripe would be the ref not even looking at it before letting the goal stand. Latest rule updates specifically say "For subjective decisions, e.g. intensity of a foul challenge, interference at offside, handball considerations, an on-field review (OFR) is appropriate"

Obviously  I love that the goal stood but if the roles were reversed, many here would be saying exactly the opposite, especially because ATL had that BWP goal disallowed.

I know Barlow isn't great but see the way he stepped in when red head grabbed RZa, I'd keep a guy on a team just because of that.

I think all of us would be fine with Barlow being our 4th or 5th striker option. The problem is he's been #1 for most of the season.

There was no foul. Obvious dive by Higuiain getting a star call. Total easy BS by the ref.

Homer alert. Clear foul on a defender's wild reach, always going to get called.

#1372347 Kaku will leave for qualifiers

Any player, getting called up by their National Teams, should get the opportunity to represent their National Team. Current pandemic and quarantine rules aside, if Kaku gets called up, he should be allowed to go! I don't want a sulking Kaku again!

Of course... the discussion is precisely about the very present impact of pandemic and quarantine rules.
