Since the owners can take the financial hit of a lockout and the players cant it puts ownership in the position of being able to write the rules

The NHL lockouts should be looked at:
https://www.prostock...ockout-history/
The goal in my view should be a partnership.
50/50 revenue split.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

So, how much did they lose?
Empty stadiums, no concessions, shortened schedule, low ratings, sunken costs, additional expenses.

Given the steadily increasing value of an MLS franchise, probably nothing.

The people who own MLS teams aren't looking at year-to-year finances. A $25 million negative balance in a year is completely offset by a $25 million increase in franchise value.

Again, they are crying poverty, and that's why these (MLS-initiated) CBA negotiations are happening. It is foolish to take anything the owners say at anything resembling face value.

To add, I don't even think they are really claiming poverty. Poverty would require immediate reduction in expenses in 2021. They want to reduce expenses 7 years down the road.

They are not crying poverty because they would be laughed out of town. If they were poor they wouldnt be offering guaranteed salaries health benefits etc in 2021. Wages are the first thing to go when a company is in trouble (or when they want to beef up profits for the top brass/shareholders)

And they want to reduce BARGAINING power down the road. Having to negotiate with the union leading up to a World Cup is their worst nightmare. That is the one and only scenario when they REALLY would not want a labor strike.

Reserve minimum salary: 97K. Gone are the days of 12K reserve contracts, thank God. Current players need to thank the ones who paved the way.

Diego Jimenez on a "developmental contract" for 13k in '08. Kenny Arena didn't make that much either, and he'd raid the buffet after games, I don't blame him.

Normally, I don't really do sports podcasts a lot, but here's a short podcast re some of the CBA stuff.

I am dumbfounded how Garber is claiming a hit of $1 billion in revenue in 2020. Don Garber: MLS is forecasted to lose pretty close to $1 billion | SBI Soccer

Sounds like BS math. His argument is that MLS depends on in game stadium revenue more than other leagues, so they are getting hit worse. But he is talking total revenue, not profit, so MLS's financial setup (e.g. % of revenue from stadium vs. sponsorship required to keep things running) is irrelevant.

Also, I saw reports that total revenue from 2017/2018 was $1 billion, and that's inclusive of sponsorships: MLS vs Premier League: Revenue, Salaries & Attendance [2021] (wsn.com)

As an analogue, NBA is claiming a 2020 hit of $800MM to revenue from gate receipts (and an additional $400MM from sponsorship/merch issues, including China/Hong Kong/Morey fallout). NBA revenue for 2019-20 season dropped 10% to $8.3 billion, sources say (espn.com) The NBA has 2.5x as many games and 20% more teams. I don't see how MLS had greater hit from Covid and no fans at games (from a revenue perspective) than the NBA.

My guess is the bigger a hit they could tell the players (and fans) they were absorbing in 2020, the more sympathetic players (and fans) might be in CBA agreement. Gain sympathy, then exchange that for maximizing profits in 2026/2027.

Would you believe $100 Million in depreciation?
How about $10 Million in TAM?

BUMP re U22 rule:

https://twitter.com/...299558052503558

HGs and draftees eligible. RBNY found their loophole to use the spots without actually spending any money

Also players can stay on until 25. Atlanta, etc. will essentially have 6 DPs while RBNY will be running around with Yearwood and 2nd division loaned players.
