I thought the guy was good - definitely better/more knowledgeable than Cangelosi.

Isn't he the guy who commentated the livestream of the Open Cup game last year? Or some random streamed game?

Honestly, I found him to be very bland. No passion for a play-by-play guy.
In the 2nd half, the Crew had a free kick and Yardley was trying to point out that they had 4 offensive players purposely blocking Robles view just before the ball was kicked. Shep responded with a cold "no, you're reading too much into it" (or perhaps I'm reading too much into his response since he followed up that he was "speaking as a goalkeeper").
Yardley has a bunch of videos he personally uploaded on YouTube of his work doing various events over the years....and he's just as bland there.

There were long period when no one would talk.. I was having a hard time figuring out who was making plays. I'd like more talk.

I wondered who would take over for Joe Toleson when Cangelosi is unavailable. Yardley wasn't bad. Better than many local PxP guys. My favorite American voice in soccer is John Strong.

Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me? Or indeed with wit to understand me?

I found his play by play to be a solid B performance. I liked the the fact he sounded like an American who enjoyed what he was watching. I think he should come back again when Steve isn't available.

I'm not a big Steve-C.-as-commentator fan but I've heard him as a guest on soccer talk shows (e.g. Sirius FC) and the guy seems to be invested in soccer. Yardley was OK as a replacement, yes, a little bland (i.e. a more-or-less moderate amplitude to his voice) but he's young and I frankly prefer less talk to more. We could do worse.

I was initially dubious about him but by the end of the game I was quite impressed. He actually called the game and kept the chit chat down to a minimum. Plus he did his homework. The anectdotes about players on both teams was excellent.
