Word is DCU is set to sign a foreign keeper so Pickens may be staying overseas after all.

Rolfe mentioned in his blog that the Fire still hold his rights (Slim). Can anyone explain to me how all of this works?

When a player leaves the MLS to go abroad, the team that they left from still retains the rights to that player for 2 years after their departure. Which means that if slim wanted to come back he has a few options; 1. wait out the 2 years so he is able to move wherever he wants unrestricted. 2. have a team of his choice negotiate with the Fire for his rights so they can then sign him. 3. Play for the Fire and STFU.

Players still sign with the league first, then the specific club--it is a checks and balances system to ensure that, for now, parity prevails and the league remains economically viable--it also ensures that while some teams may seem favoured, they are in fact, also restricted by the same rules. Yes, yes, let's all point to LA and the fabulous 'bending' of the rules, but nothing in life is actually fair--so tought shit. It is a flawed system, and although I do feel that AEG should be given some special dispensation as they supported half of the league for the first decade of existence, I can't say that from a sporting level it is fairly....well.....sporting of them. Right now they have the reigning champs and the 'jewel' of the MLS.....fair enough. Hopefully other franchises will become stable and profitable so that we can begin to see a bit of a break from the parity that we are all so desperate to see us get away from. but first things first, let's get the league a little more solidified and stable--and that could take another decade to decade and a half. So I don't think the current system will go anywhere for a while.

Cervi close to landing a pretty good job.

I'd guess the money is a bit better than what he would have made here.

I'm just annoyed that we essentially wasted a pick on the bum. can't the league work something out where the players in the draft are actually going to play in the MLS?! It's really shit to think that you could have the #1 pick and not get the player simply because they won't play for the league or couldn't agree on a wage.....wouldn't you think you'd do that BEFORE the draft?

Christ, almost anything would be more than he was offered here.

This is why, down the road, doing away with the draft will be good.
This is the bottom line on why we are developing the acadamy system.
