Duvall - 2nd round pick (NYRB)

Zizzo - never drafted

Miller  - never drafted

DP - never drafted

Zubar - never drafted

Miazga - never drafted

Ouimette - never drafted

Taxi - never drafted

Dax - 1st round pick (Dallas)

sacha - 1st round pick (Chivas)

Felipe - never drafted

Sam - never drafted

Grella - never drafted

Davis - never drafted

Veron - never drafted

BWP - never drafted

Abang - never drafted

The "MLS draft is important" argument is one that I've never bought into and the facts haven't done anything to dispel that in my view.

Teams more regularly at the bottom of the table obviously benefit more.  We've generally been picking in the teens, and have often traded away picks.

Draft picks have always been referred to as "magic beans" which is sad and appropriate.

"Magic beans" in an MLS context used to be allocation money.

"The draft is a crapshoot" has always been the excuse used by teams who were total shit at drafting players, while teams who were good at drafting players kept bringing in talent.

This is true, but is part of a bigger problem: historically we have done a very poor job of using existing, regular MLS mechanisms to build value in the squad, and instead relied on out-spending our opponents for top talent, while trading players and picks for short term fixes at other positions.

Red Bull has decided to pare down spending considerably, meaning we need to find some way to equalize disadvantages. We've done a good job of building a youth system, although we should all be totally fuckin' alarmed that Olosunde is getting away. One thing we did do effectively was come up with a tactical system that shrinks the difference between team stacked with talent and a team with less talent, but as we can see, it's possible for an opponent to beat tactics with better tactics. So we need to ensure we're building as much value in the squad through every available mechanism, and one of those regular mechanisms is the draft. Shit on it all you want, but the ability to get a good player in the draft is NOT random chance.

We pared down spending on high end name DPs.  Upped spending in other areas, including transfer fee for an entering his prime Argentine player.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't seem like much, but I think that's more a comment on how much talent actually comes through the draft vs. how well we've drafted. There are a lot of teams that have not gotten nearly as much out of the draft as we have over the past several years. Portland, for example, has not had a drafted player log a single minute of playing time in their rookie seasons since 2012.

You're stretching a bit there.

Fochive was a 2014 draftee but got eight starts in 2015 after spending his first year for the reserve team. Multiple draftees in the Porter era play for Timbers 2 - they're still in the system. Now if McLaws or Bonomo makes a jump from RBNY 2, then we're actually creating a trajectory for these guys.

I don't think its a stretch at all to say that Portland hasn't made good use of the draft not having gotten a starter in 3 seasons. Keeping guys in the system is great, I hope we do the same, but drafting for the USL team in hopes that they make a jump at some point isn't exactly a high bar and I think we've done better than that the past several years. You're suggesting we haven't made good enough use of the draft recently, but looking at how every other team across the league has drafted over the past 5-6 years I don't see how we're much worse off. Everyone has plenty of busts.

Honest mistake. I think the phrase for the late-round throw-in draft pick was 'bag of balls'. That was when MLS player movement rules were even more draconian (ie no re-entry draft, stricter waiver restrictions) and teams by rule had to trade SOMETHING in exchange for a player's rights.
