Joevin Jones just signed a pre-contract with Darmstadt.

Looks like an actual contract:

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I'm still unsure on why anyone would ever advocate for the club selling their best players.  We sold Miazga for $5M.  We lost a highly talented player, a starter, and a key defender.. who was young.  We gained... not much.  If there isn't anything to gain (see Dax sale), then what's the point of selling?  Every fan should be hoping that the club retains it's best talent.  I don't want this club to be a farm, I want it to become the best damn club in the US.

You can approach a player with six months left on his deal to sign with you. It's called a pre-contract, I suppose because it starts in the future.

Some rationalize that it's better to trade/sell a player who wants to leave, and get something in return.

We sold Miazga for $5M.

But, how much of that did RB actually receive, and what was done with that money?

OK. The nomenclature escapes me. It's a contract.

If I'm running an MLS team, I'm almost never selling.  Lawrence would fetch at most $2 million (IMO), and I think the team itself would only get maybe half of that.  With the money behind every ownership group in the league, $1 million isn't really worth it; they can take that financial loss if it gives them a better chance of competing.

But it's not about that, right? It's about being able to maintain your salary cap without getting into any kind of long term problems.

I guess the real question is: What do we think Taxi is going to demand in terms of salary IF he signs a new contract? He's been very good for us since his arrival and through the first half of this year you could argue that outside of maybe Robles he's been our best player. He had an outstanding Gold Cup (best 11), contributed (or scored) 2 of the most important goals for them in that tourney, he's an automatic starter for Jamaica (who despite qualifying) are a strong and organized defensive side (thanks in part to him)...the list goes on and on. What do we think he'll demand and what us our threshold knowing that we need to be smart about how we manage the cap.

Speaking of Robles there's no way in hell management pays him more than that guy ($290k). So what will Kemar demand and would that demand be reasonable relative to managing the cap.

Again, this isn't a slight on Taxi at all. If their were no cap or the cap was much higher it's a NO BRAINER to keep him here for as long as possible. But the team needs to be smart about where in the field they spend their money (and funny money).

MLS is not an end point for highly talented players.

That's because mls does not pay it's players. But if we paid Kemar like he is a top 3 player on the team he would stay. It's funny how the likes of Vernon and Baah can stay on the team for 2 and 3 years or more but our good to very good players are let go. And we wonder why we can't win MLS cup or champions league.

We're not cursed. We're just cheap as hell!

Cut Vernon and pay him 600k. He is the top left back in the region. Show him the money!

The problem is that you know getting rid of Veron will come back to bite us in the ass when he goes somewhere else and ends up a star.

comparable players seem to get about 250-300.   Probably 300 K seems good from my perspective.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

I would be ok with kemar at 300k. Problem is, kemar can easily get more than that by moving to Europe.

I think he is the type of player that you should sell if you get an offer.

He deserves a raise but i think he is replaceable.

EXACTLY. This is the problem. If he doesn't want to go to Europe to try his chances at a higher level he most CERTAINLY is going to want to get PAID.

So my point (opinion) is that we are not going to be able (or willing) to pay him what either he or his agent or Europe think he should be paid.

If that is the case we have to sell and we have to do it soon so we get SOME kind of value out of it. I think if an offer comes in over $2 mil we take it no questions asked. Less and you head to the bargaining table to see if you can squeeze a bit more.

For 300k, I think you can get a better international player. He is at most a 150-190k player in mls.
