#1395264 Patryk "The Devil" Klimala no longer a rumour

Posted by thoward18 on Today, 02:11 PM

Saying that shows Klimala to be "bad" indicates that you have no idea what those numbers mean and how data analysts measure competency.

It means Klimala drastically underperformed his expected goals output. There are two ways to interpret that. One is that he's a shit finisher. The other is that he was making good runs and getting into good positions but got extremely unlucky. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Data analysts at RBNY like Sam Goldberg have access to much more indicative data, mainly post-shot expected goals based on shot trajectory, goalkeeper positioning, etc. That will tell a better story. Is it that his shots sucked or that GKs were making great saves?

Future Metro HOF. Easy call there.

#1395222 Fabio, Gutman, and others released

I'm very much hoping that the lack of mention of trying to retain Gutman is because he's property of another MLS team and not because it's been ruled out.

Stroud would not start for our team. Ability aside, he's a wide player that doesn't fit our system.

Those two torn ACLs ruined him.

That's probably the case but I also can't think of a worse place to resurrect a career than FC Cincinnati.

Nani and Florian Valot announced they are moving on. Nani would solve some problems in the attack. Had 10g, 7a this season.

If you think there's even a .005% chance that Red Bull would consider making a 36-year-old Nani a DP and ask him to press for 90 minutes then I have some Enron stock to sell you.

#1394958 A coaching license confers actual ability?

Posted by thoward18 on 23 November 2021 - 10:14 PM

I dont know but one reason Jesse pursued his is because it increased his chances of coaching in the top league in Europe. There was an interview around the time he left mid season to do his studies

But then again, Bob Bradley was the only other American coach with that license and he did not have much success, so go figure

The license is a requirement to manage at certain levels. It's less an SAT test and more a driver's license.

#1394938 Struber to Bremen?

Posted by thoward18 on 23 November 2021 - 04:24 PM

Is he even a good coach?

Has anyone been super impressed with him.

How do people fail upwards in soccer all the time ?

He took one of the worst defensive sides in MLS last season and turned them into arguably the best this season despite the team MVP missing 95% of the season. We finished above where basically everyone had us in the standings. I'm not saying he's perfect but I'd say that nothing really happened this season to tarnish his prior resume which had Bundesliga and op Championship teams shorlisting him.

They've been pretty clear from the beginning that they were trying to build a contender for 2022. Agree or disagree with the plan all you want, that's fair. My point is only that what White vs Klimala did this year is not really indicative of anything. Next season will be the one to fully judge Thelwell.

Its easy to look game by game and see how we could have won with just decent finishing.     But when you do that, you tend to ignore the lost opportunities the other team had.

That said, if we just scored the goals we we should have, we would have still finished just 4th in the East for Goal Diff (a better measure than goals scored, because we are a defensive minded team).    Not good enough.   We need more chances and better finishing.

I'm 100% with you. But there's no chance in hell Jozy limping around the field helps us out with that. We need addiions for sure. Not him.

I'm still not sold on Yearwood.   He's maybe a physical upgrade over Davis (though less durable), but the stuff he does well is the same stuff Davis does well, which means we have two guys who are good at reading and breaking up an opposing attack, but no one centrally connecting the defense and midfield to the offense.    He's a a card magnet, a terrible passer, and useless in the air.

It worked with Felipe and Dax, and while Felipe was a better deep lying distributor, Yearwood is a much better progressive dribbler. Davis is a pretty good passer from midfield. It absolutely can work as long as we find someone who can actually distribute centrally in the final third.

Klimala is no hero but we don't get into the playoffs without him, either. I'm going to judge him with a far harsher lens next season.

Individually, it can't be anyone besides Amaya. "The Offense" is a good option as well.

This is easily the biggest offseason since Marsch/Kljestan in 2015. A lot of pivotal decisions to be made with Coronel, Davis, Fabio, Long, and Gutman. Cap space opening up with Hamlett's fuckups departing. Struber's system implemented. Anything less than 4th in the East is a failure.

#1394294 Davis, Sean Davis - Free Agent

Posted by thoward18 on 12 November 2021 - 02:35 AM

According to MLSPA, we are holding options on Long and Meara (they would be foolish not to pick up Long, but who knows with Meara), and the only free agents and Davis and Royer.

Hope Royer goes to Europe. Don't want to see him on another MLS team, like so many of our once-greats.

Lindpere getting subbed on for the Fire during the SS game was a bizarre afterthought. I felt a bit bad for him in that moment.

#1394217 Kyle Duncan to Belgium

Posted by thoward18 on 10 November 2021 - 10:52 AM

Six months is only when Duncan was able to sign elsewhere on a free. It's possible that even a year ago he had decided he wanted to explore the market when the time came. It's possible there was nothing Thelwell could do to convince him to stay and it's possible they explored the transfer market and decided having him for a full year was worth more than whatever the offers were.

This does suck but it's the business. Hopefully they can convince Edwards to stay. Otherwise, finding two RBs is going to be a huge task this winter. Particularly given Struber's tactical preferences.
