highlight of the game - Metrofanatic write up!

Metro, who famously did not register a shot on goal versus Columbus, failed to do so here for 81 minutes. They did end up with five, but none of them really threatened.

Where does it leave us, as Metro waits for the more successful team to end the tournament? A limited team with a limited coach with a limited budget and a limited strategy, on and off the field. We might welcome a return to slumber...

Also write up on MLS soccer makes the point

Yuya Kubo’s ....capitalized on what the Red Bulls gave him, and now the Japanese striker has two goals on the year.

per MLS write up Red Bulls attempted a whopping 51 crosses on goal,

absurd to attempt all these crosses with 2 small forwards...

For me it's simple.

Was everyone who knew anything about mls / us saying we were a below average roster?

Yes.

Before the season we were all confused on how we didn't get a 9 and now that sims is gone another RW?

Yes

I don't blame omir for not being Carlos Vela or Ibra. He is being put in a situation to fail. He should be getting spot starts at attacking midfield not being asked to play 9 and win crosses against Kendall fucking Watson.

I'm sorry but to blame the players is just lazy. They're trying, they want to play well and get new contracts or move and double their pay.

A good barometer I always use is if we randomly dissolved tomorrow where would most of our guys be playing. Mls starters? Usl sides?

Look at buckmaster, I was honestly the most vocal person against him last year from day 1 of the mls contract. It's not his fault he is what he is and when he got cut and left no mls offers. We as an organization we're simply ok with playing a USL guy in an away playoff match simple as that.

the upside

sure must be motivating to the USL players that they have a legit shot at cracking the first team roster soon.......

Compare 2018 starters to 2020

Robles > Jensen

Kemar > Pendant

Long 2018 > Long 2020

Parker > Tarek

Murillo > Duncan

Adams > Casseres

Davis = Davis

Kaku = Kaku

Muyl/Rza < Valot

Royer = Royer

BWP > White/Barlow/etc

It's pretty obvious

I can't even imagine that there might be ppl who think once Armas is gone, the new coach will have the team go back to the high press, run themselves into the ground in 90 degree heat/90% humidity, win every second ball, and develop players who'll be NT level.

No one is saying that.

Here is what literally no one would disagree with:

We need more players. GOOD players.

A new coach would improve the team. Even if that improvement was minimal.

Both things can be true.

def was a few games where the SW lost heart and just didn't vocally support the team. and that's because the ppl in the SW were watching the team not perform to expectations.

but what ARE those expectations?

we expect the team to at least compete for the Shield, to make the playoffs, to go deep in tournaments, hopefully make the final. they can't do that without the necessary personnel to make it happen. i have no qualms with promoting the right amount of USL reserve players to compete for spots in the 18. it just seems that's the default now with USL promotions. also it seems that the team can't close on players outside of MLS who are more than just serviceable guys who can make an 18. i'd prefer better acquisitions than that, as would other fans. and in the past 18 months pre-Thelwell's hiring, the staff was not competent enough to make those signings happen. as a result, the 2019 was what it was, trying to make do with leftovers, essentially.

those who are fed up with this method just don't come to games anymore, they'll prob just watch the game at home and be done with it.

last yr was pretty bad, at least from the SW, less energy, songs petering out quicker, more ppl standing idle, etc. part of it was due to the team being out there and not getting the job done.

I mean since 2017 the USL team finished 7th, 5th and 6th in in the eastern conference and we have promoted from there mistaking them for the 2016 team that did the double.  They were always going to need to be supplemented more than the past teams with first team signings but then we compounded it with signings like Muhamad Keita and Andy Ivan.

The USL team this year has more raw talent but we won't benefit from the best guys for at least a couple seasons.  Thelwell needs to fill the gap or we will be bad for some time.  And frankly i think the drop in first team talent has hindered the development of some of the younger first team guys (i.e. Casseres).  The only younger guy that had good competition for his spot (Duncan) is the one that looks like a good MLS player.

Those of you who go back to the Giants Stadium days will remember that the players had to go through the tunnel under 101 and our supporters raining abuse on our own players had an incredibly negative impact. Players didn't improve and it ended up being straight up poison for our relationship with the players and team.

This result is the culmination of apathetic nature of this team of the last 5 years. This team has never had the killer instinct like an LAFC, a Toronto, Seattle, or a 2018 Atlanta team that would step on the throats of their opponents. It all goes back to us as fans who allow for this shit to happen and not demand better. Too much, "We love you Metro" and "as long as I'm breathing" chants. Time to be negative, time to boo our players for failing when we get back into the stadiums.  The positivity no matter the result is what causes our new USL players to play like bitches. Our positive nature as a fan base is killing us. It has cost us MLS cups, US Open Cups etc. We shouldnt be the goddamn pre 2016 Chicago Cubs of MLS. Hopefully Chicago and Houston fuck up their matches and we advance by a miracle. But we dont deserve to advance.

So the team would be better if the few fans the team has were more negative?  I highly doubt that.  If you look at the history of all professional sports, the one thing that most obviously translates to success is ownership spending money on players.  I know of know underfunded team in history that overachieved based on a small, very negative fanbase.

Felt bad for Mines last night, you could tell how hard he was trying and how much pressure he was putting on himself.  I thought he was OK, certainly no worse than anyone else.  Put in a few good crosses.

And I think Long also pulled a "swing and a miss" last night.

Royer had a fun one towards the end of the first half where he got the ball 40 yards from goal, looked left, looked right, saw zero teammates within 20 yards to support, and just blasted the hell out of the ball right into the defender 1 yard in front of him.

Those last 10 roster spots are always going to be for USL promotees and HGs, and ideally they should be turning over with frequency after players are evaluated at the MLS level and if they can cut it.

The 20 senior roster spots are where this team has got it really wrong, this should be where your first XI and primary backups should be. Too many spots going to waste on guys who cant get on the field, whose roles are too specific to be useful, and just plain arent good enough for the league.

a little harsh as the kid was more effective than the starters and brought more energy and passion

(EDIT I did something similar in a game last year - thankfully no video)

now if you posted video of Tarek's 2nd assist in 2 games I would say fair enough

I was joking with someone on Reddit about this, but the "assist" last night was a legitimate beauty. On the run, with his weaker foot, and he lays it off with the perfect weight for Kubo to run on to and take a shot. Kaku would have been proud!
