MLS Expansion Draft for Montreal

The draft will take place on Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 2 pm ET.

Clubs must submit their protected roster to MLS on Monday, November 21.

2012 MLS Expansion Draft Rules

• MLS Clubs may protect 11 players between their On-budget and their Off-budget Roster. If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2011, he will still be considered part of the club’s roster.

• If a club protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate subject to terms of the new CBA.

• If a player retires, he will not be a part of the club’s roster, but his club will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play.

• Players on a club’s Off-budget Roster, other than Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2011 MLS Season or Homegrown Players on a Club’s Off-budget Roster, will be part of the expansion draft.

• Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2011 MLS Season and Homegrown Players on a club’s Off-budget Roster at the end of the 2011 MLS Season are automatically protected (Clubs do not have to use a protected slot on them).

• Clubs are restricted in the number of international player(s) that they may make available. Clubs may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus three, provided that if a club has three or fewer international players it may make available not more than one. (See table below).

• For purposes of this expansion process, for US-based clubs, any non-domestic US player would count as an International and, for Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps, any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian players would count as an International.

• Designated players are NOT automatically protected (i.e., clubs must choose whether to protect such players and if such player is not protected, he will be available for selection in the Expansion Draft). However, if the Designated Player has a no-trade clause in his contract, then his MLS club must protect him and he will count as one of the 11 players who may be protected.

• Once a player has been claimed from a team’s non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players.

• Rounds: The expansion draft will be 10 rounds.

MLS Re-Entry Draft (Dec. 5 and 12)

This year, the Stage 1 draft of the Re-Entry Process will be held on Dec. 5. Teams will select in reverse order of their finish during the 2011 season, taking into account their playoff performances. The expansion Montreal Impact will have the 19th selection.

Teams will be able to select players who fall under the following circumstances:

  • Players who are at least 23 years old and have a minimum of three years of MLS experience whose options were not exercised by their clubs (available at option salary for 2012).
  • Players who are at least 25 years old with a minimum of four years of MLS experience who are out of contract and whose club does not offer them a contract at their previous salary (available at 2011 salary).
  • Players who are at least 30 years old with a minimum of eight years of MLS experience who are out of contract and whose club does not wish to re-sign them (available for at least 105 percent of their 2011 salary).

Players who are not selected in the Stage 1 draft will be made available for the Stage 2 draft on Dec. 12. Clubs selecting players in Stage 2 will negotiate a new salary with any player not under contract.

Teams also have the option of passing on their selection.

Players who remain unselected after Stage 2 will be available to any MLS club on a first-come, first-served basis.

Players with expiring contracts or options that are not renewed by their clubs who do not meet the age and service requirements necessary to be included in the Re-Entry Process may be part of the Waiver Draft on Nov. 23.

IMO the protected 11 players pretty much pick themselves.

the G's have to protect Beckham regardless of if he leaves or not, as he is still under contract in 2011 and almost certainly has a no trade clause too.

My Guess: the G's trade/transfer one of their 2 keepers (Saunders/Ricketts) before the expansion draft or it's gonna be one of Magee or Cardoso that is left unprotected.

Berhalter retires, Hejduk and Kirovski might very well follow too.

Likely all the G's DPs have no trade clauses, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm also asuming Juninho will be back (his contract with Sao Paulo ends in 6 months I believe). I'm sure the G's can get a loan extension or buyout for him.

Predicted Protected Players

  • Landon Donovan
  • David Beckham (INT)
  • Robbie Keane (INT)
  • Omar Gonzalez
  • AJ DeLaGarza
  • Todd Dunivant
  • Juninho (INT)
    ----------------------
  • Sean Franklin (out of contract)
  • Josh Saunders
  • Donovan Ricketts (G)
  • Mike Magee
  • Paolo Cardoso (INT)

IMO most likely to be picked by Montreal (maybe then traded) unless protected: Franklin, Magee, Cardoso, Saunders, Ricketts, Barrett, Christman

The Galaxy are not protecting Mike Magee. Mike Magee protects the Galaxy. Or something like that.

A little surprised we're protecting Ricketts, since he's pricey for a back-up. Maybe he's more valuable as part of a trade?

A decision definitely needs to be made as to who we're sticking with. No point in paying a backup that much, and Saunders deserves a raise.

I would like to stick with Saunders. Ricketts may be a little better in some regards, but Saunders is not nearly as injury prone.

Well either one of Saunders/Ricketts has some trade value, so I understand if they protect both.

I think Montreal already signed a GK, so that might not be high on their list, unless the wanted to trade them.

Personally I'd go with Saunders over Ricketts too. He's younger, cheaper, a bit less injury prone and not much worse performance wise.

ps: looks like Kirovski is retiring too, as he is neither on the protected/unprotected list along with Berhalter.
Jack McBean is automatically protected as homegrown player.

Ricketts is a better distributor of the ball, overall positioning and is better at catching the ball. However, he is frail and old. Saunders is definitely less expensive and doesn't really represent a huge drop off in MLS standards. Either one would be good for trades, as the G's likely can't keep both. I know NY needs a new keeper. Any other teams out there in need?

Oh no! What will we ever do without Jovan? [/sarcasm]

Meh, Jovan's time has been up for a while. So much for the "future of American soccer".

It appears to me that the list reflects overall quality of the players...period. Taking a look at the list I would agree with Bruce that all the players on the unprotected list are of lesser quality than all the players on the protected list. Basically, Bruce is saying that the Colonel may get a raise but the combination of Ricketts and Saunders salary is about what would be expected for a first choice and backup keeper. If Saunders continues to shine, then Ricketts becomes expendible, especially if Perk is not picked up in the expansion draft. Ricketts probably has the best market value outside the MLS.

I wouldn't be surprised if Montreal picks up Perk, Cardozo or Stephens because of their salaries and their upside. It would be just as likely that the G's keep their roster intact, which is really something when you think about it.

I haven't heard any news about Sean and his salary negotiations. It's a bit of a tough decision because the G's aren't going to offer the same kind of money other teams could offer for an MLS Allstar right back. On the other hand I can see Sean wanting to stay in LA. The quality of the Galaxy organization may actually influence players to stay in LA when they could probably get more money elsewhere. That, at least, is what I hope to be the case.

i like the list...

anyone who is going unprotected except for stephens wouldn't really work in any other system but this one. it looks like bruce is keeping together our mls best defense. everyone else is really some sort of plug in.

it really is amazing what bruce has been able to do with our old has beens. i'm not sure who won it, but bruce should have won GM of the year for the past three seasons.

good summary Catamount.

as for Franklin, he's out of contract, as is Gonzalez appearantly next year.
At least DeLaGara was signed to a new long term deal a couple of months ago.

Here is some issues the G's have to deal with in the offseason, aside the GK situation.
I hope most of the XI will remain intact.

the DPs
Beckham = does he stay or does he go?
Keane = has stated that he doesn't want do to a loan this offseason.
Donovan = does he make a loan? the G's still have 2 club sided option years on his deal which they surely are gonna take up.

the loanees
Juninho = will he be back?
Leonardo = will he be back?
Lopez = will he be back?

others
Barrett = will the G's look to unload him if he still has such a high salary, which this time would have to be fully paid by the G's?
Franklin = will he sign a new deal or leave?
Gonzalez = will he stay and play out his final year (+ force his way into the USMNT team with guarnateed playing time) or will a foreign club make an offer to good to refuse for the G's and Omar himself?

going back it's interesting that they kept bex protected. this leads me to believe they've had greater discussions about his future in LA. perhaps he will be back one more season....
