Not sure if this has been addressed, or whether this article has been posted anywhere here on MF, but I figured BTDH would be the best place for it.

http://www.newjersey...-worth-the-cost

Harrison wants some of the money back from the soccer team, and it wants it now.

The biggest question that needs to be answered in the 2012 Major League Soccer season will not come from a result on the field but rather a judge in some courtroom.

It will be finances and will Harrison salvage something by getting a check for property taxes at the stadium site.

The New York Red Bulls franchise, which operates in a Harrison, New Jersey stadium, doesn't want to pay property taxes to the municipality. Red Bulls owner Dietrich Mateschitz refused to pay his 2010 and 2011 tax bill, which comes out to about $3.6 million because the team's lawyers feel that the land underneath the stadium is owned by the tax-exempt Harrison Redevelopment Agency.

Why should Mateschitz pay for something he doesn't really own? The land below his soccer stadium.

In a Newark courtroom in January, Judge Christine Nugent told Mateschitz's lawyers that she disagreed with the Red Bulls franchise claim and ordered the team to pay the property taxes. The Mateschitz’s franchise lawyers appealed Judge Nugent's ruling.

The judge also said no to another notion that the franchise put forth. Red Bulls attorneys said because the team-owned stadium serves a public purpose, it should be tax-exempt.

Last Sunday should be the happiest day of the year for New York Red Bulls fans. The soccer season began with a game at the 3-year-old Harrison stadium that comes equipped with all of the state of the art right gadgets that owners think fans crave -- luxury boxes, expensive seats, and big priced food.

Yeah, the writer really sounds like he did his homework.

What a tool. I stopped reading after the first paragraph, which was lazy journalism from the start.

Pay up !

Perhaps you needed to read a bit further:
"In Chester, Pa. there is a new soccer stadium for the Philadelphia Union Major League Soccer franchise but the stadium has not put a dent in helping the depleted finances of the city."

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Now it's the RedBulls fans. they may be even louder than the DC guys who, for reasons beyond imagining, had 50 seats saved for them up front.

Philadelphia: I love you guys, really, but you're getting schooled.

The noise in here is deafening.

its a known fact that stadiums do not boost economy's or spur development, you get a gem here or there but it normally doesn't work. i cant wait till the NETS bitch about why no one is showing up to the games in brooklyn and why the arena is constantly empty except for when the knicks are in town

I don't think it's going to be like that at all... whens the last time you went down to Atlantic Center in Brooklyn? It's a hoppin area, nexus of several neighborhoods, lots of foot traffic... I know several people who are getting partial STH packages when the stadium opens...

I agree. A lot of people already live in/ hang out in that area. I think the Nets arena will be a success, especially if the team is halfway decent.

Won't take much to be more successful than the Nets.

Problem with the Nets has always been that this area is already an entrenched Knicks stronghold. Growing up in Bergen County approximately 15 miles from both the Izod Center and the Prudential Center, I would say that out of all the NBA fans I knew, approximately only 1 in 10 were Nets fans. 7 in 10 supported the Knicks, while the other 20% supported a different team entirely (Lakers, Bulls, Hornets, whomever.)

Moving to Newark wasn't going to change that perception very much as the Knicks are still the dominant fanbase around that arena.

I don't know the demographics of the new Brooklyn arena, but I would imagine there are less entrenched Knicks fans there than there were in Jersey. Add to that, Brooklyn doesn't have another professional sports franchise (North Jersey already has the Giants, Jets, Devils, and Red Bulls) to compete for entertainment dollars. More attractive area for people to go to and easy access to train lines... it's not nor will it be the Knicks, but it's certainly better than what they have going now.

"Obviously, I want to make a living (in soccer), to say the least," he said. "There's so much you can accomplish in the soccer world, and right now I'm focused on having a good season with the Red Bulls. Ultimately, our goal is to win the MLS Cup, and I see no reason why we can't." - #4 Tyler Adams

I probably know more current full STHs, who are NOT following the Nets to BK.

I can't imagine why you are imagining this.

Of course, with the pending price increase for Knix tix, the Nets could sell cheaper tickets to those who don't care who the home team is, when the Celtics, Sixers, Heat, Clippers or Lakers come to town.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
