they held on to him too long because the only other CB that was developed since hamlet went to the front office was nealis. All the other draft picks and foreign signings were busts. At this point we might as well keep him and hope he has a strong world cup showing. It's the only way we'll be able to get any sort of meaningful transfer fee for him. I think realistically RBNY held him for too long similar to Kaku, though.

I'm under the (unfounded) opinion that Long was slated to be sold summer of 2021 - but then his Achilles injury occurred.
Prior to this year, I thought both Long and Parker were slated to be sold as they were an expensive CB combo on the later years of contracts - sort of seemed to fit RB M.O.
I could see a loan with option to buy to a team in Championship in the winter. I don't think Long plays for Metro again, unfortunately. Long makes 10x what Nealis makes.

Basically every window after the summer of 2018 I've been sure they're going to sell Long. That was the summer that he started to have legit offers coming in, but the team knew they had a shot at the championship and wanted to go for it.
I'm not sure what held the team back from selling any time in 2019 or before the 2020 season. Maybe elf is right that the team had no confidence in their ability to replace him like they have been with other high profile departures over the years.

I think long stays. They need leadership on this squad and if usmnt makes it to wc he probably has the best chance to play which would be good exposure for nyrb.

I tend to think Thelwell doesn't have those sorts of nerves. If a player meets the criteria for sale (last year of contract and near to their highest projected market value), then I think Thelwell will sell and figure out how to repair the roster after. Right now, I'm surprised, but its looking like there won't be an insurmountable hole if Long is sold and he could just backfill with youth. Long injury aside, it seems like Thelwell's dream scenario - sell a player that you got for free and buy a couple kids to replace.
Loan with option to purchase makes sense in light of the injury. While I don't suspect we'll be able to cheer Long on in an RB jersey again, hopefully we get to in a Nats jersey.

Loan to Championship makes tons of sense provided Long is at a standpoint in healing to be able to and Thiewell has connections to make it happen.
After that we can see as I could see us rolling with 3 CB Long Nealis and Reyes with Monzon in development. Who knows what happens with Edwards and Gutman. Lots of moving parts.
Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Was happy to see video of him in training.
Good stuff mainly for next season. Anything out of this season is a bonus but if he's out there running around, gotta figure he's not too far off.
