Nealis needs a lot of work on his passing game, but he's elite in the air and clearing the ball, and at 24 he's young for a CB.

This was the most interesting part of his development this year for me. At the start of the season Nealis was playing super confident on the ball, carrying it forward and attempting line splitting passes. Granted he wasn't all that good at it and gave the ball away a whole lot, but he was clearly being encouraged to try. When we lost points one game because Nealis coughed up a turnover outside our box, Struber even said after the game he wanted Sean to be brave with the ball.

Lately though? Nealis has been way, way quicker to just boot the ball out of bounds without even picking his head up, especially if he's facing our goal. Compare that to Reyes who can turn with the ball and maintain possession in the same situation. I think Struber may have told Nealis at some point they've gotta take that part of his development slower, cause he's got a long way to go with it.

We dont need nealis to be the hero.

We did on Saturday.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Statistically, he's among the worst CBs in the league for dribbles, pass attempts and passes completed.   Meanwhile, he's 99th percentile for clearances and aerial wins..  Know your limitations, play to your strengths.

We did on Saturday.

if we depend on him being our star then we are in trouble. on Saturday, it was more of him being at the right place at the right time. instead of him doing something spectacular.  that is no knock on him. half of the game is knowing where you have to be to be effective.  he is no maldini. he is no puyol. he is no long. he  just has to keep it simple. that is why he has been effective in the last few games.

if you look at parker, he tried to be more than what he really is. And i think that ruined him.

Who says he was, or has to be, a star?
The word you used in your original comment was hero.
Nealis certainly was a hero on Saturday.

Re-watch the highlights. Everyone was in the right place.
9 players were attacking, 7 were in the box.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

I think there's probably a lot of room in-between "star" and "fourth on the CB depth chart of a contender" as you labeled him.

there is nothing wrong with being the 4th best cb on a contending team. There is a reason why struber plays so defensive instead of attacking with numbers.

relax with the hype. he did his job.

Davis does his job every week and doesnt get called hero or star.

Nobody called Nealis a star either. And nobody has to argue about Davis because there isn't anyone insisting he'd be the 4th best 6/8 on a contender.

Forgive me for not realizing that his job as a central defender was to score a late game-winning away goal.

Davis does his job every week and doesnt get called hero or star.

Had Sean somehow managed to score that goal,
IMO many would be calling him a hero.

Nealis had a goal, a goal called off side due to a foul and a near miss that went wide. Good that he agreed to a contract extension. Would be cool to see him paired with both Reyes and Long. Goals Against could be even lower.

That would make it three right footed CBs, which you might not want. Wonder if Monzon is a lefty, or the other tall guy

Monzon is a lefty, Drame is right footed. Long is right footed but always played on the left with Parker as both are right footed.

Struber likes the versatility to go 3 CB's so we are more than good now with the CB's we have going into next year.

Good problem to have at an important position.
