Pendant is pre Thelwell as well

Thelwell in February, Pendant in March.   Technically under his reign, but maybe the deal was effectively done prior.

So the narrative I see here is that both Struber AND Thelwell are incapable of building an attack but capable of building a defense?

There seems to be a belief that defenses can be built and "systemed," but offense only happens magically through desire and individual creativity.

Best parts of the Athletic interview as it pertains to the near and long term future, imo

Even if we finish in the playoffs this year, thats not what the ambition is, he said. The ambition is to be one of the top four clubs in the league. What I mean by that is, when people are talking about who wins MLS Cup, we aspire to be a club that is on that list. Within the top three, top four names being mentioned all of the time. You cant win it all the time its a cup competition and so its very difficult to win year-on-year. Seattle have done incredible to always be in there. But thats really where we want to be. I still think were at the very start of that journey, although I think weve made some good progress.

But thats our vision. To be one of the top four clubs in the country, to be a reference point for soccer in North America.

I think weve done a very good job with what weve got, said Thelwell, who was linked earlier this week to the sporting director job at newly-rich Newcastle United in his native England. But what weve got is what weve got. And so from my perspective, we just have to be better at our business. If thats what weve got available, we have to be much better at our business. If we look at this year for example, Colorado is down at the bottom as well in spending, doing very well. New England have won the Supporters Shield and have done very well with a lower budget. So whilst we all think we want more money to spend, that also brings with it its own problems.

And so what I need to do, and what Gerhard needs to do and the football club needs to do, is understand that the next window is going to be very important to us. And we need to work very hard on a couple of things. One, closing the gap on what we want our identity to look like, what the product looks like on the pitch, which is Gerhards job and hes doing a good job of it. And then two, making sure we give him the tools to do the job, recruiting the players that are gonna have the capability. Theyre not all necessarily high rollers, in my opinion. Although, I do understand that the landscape says you have to have players in certain positions who are going to have an instant impact on the game. So we are going to be looking to add some better quality of player in due course if we need to. But we dont know where this season finishes out yet, do we?

He cites Colorado and NE as examples of two teams that are doing well with lower budgets.  I can't comment on Colorado, but NE is basically the Red Bulls plus Gil and Bou.  Overall, their budget may be low, but they spent some money to buy two players that are better than anyone on the Red Bulls.  And that's the difference between fighting to make the playoffs as a low seed and winning the Supporter's Shield with a few games to spare.

Hopefully, they can bring in a couple of guys comparable to Gil and Bou this offseason.

1) The problem of whiffing on the money signings
2) Always the next window!

At least he recognizes the obvious. Executing is obviously another matter.

Also positive that the stated ambition is to be a top 3 or 4 club in MLS. If we actually get to that level, hats off to him, even if does take another 2-3 years (he'll catch a lot of flack in the meantime, of course).

We were a "top 3 or 4 club in MLS" from 2010-2018.

our vision ... be one of the top four clubs

Sounds like a standard English management comment,
since that gets you into the UEFA Champions League.
Anyway, talk is cheap.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

What? Even if we finish in the play-offs? We made play-offs for over a decade straight. It's not even the question of ambition being that low. Not making the play-offs is a massive failure for this team. Seems to me he is just covering his ass for making the team worse than it has been in years.

But not from 2019-2021. If we can be again starting in 2022 I am onboard.

From an American perspective I hear top 3-4 clubs and translate it to perennial Shield and Cup contender.
