Would really like th full story in this. How much did he want? Is it that we just didn't rate him? We gave Davis a bigger chunk didn't we? 80k?

That Ives article says Najem was looking for around that 80k number but we only offered a minimum 51k deal. That does suggest that the decision makers didn't really rate him as a contributor. If they did, it would have been easy to offer 30k more.

If this new rule had been implimented sooner, would we have been able to keep Najem?

Davis, Basuljevic, Metzger, and guys like Bezecourt and Valot can fill that role.

Plus a couple more in our pipeline.

I don't think so. I think he wanted a higher salary than we were offering, which isn't impacted by the change.

And beyond the money, positionally he doesn't make a lot of sense for us.  If they think Davis, Etienne and Basuljevic can play as #10's I why would we pay a 5th string CAM $80k.  And then combine that with the supposed desire to move to the empty bucket formation and we have no where for him to play.  With his production college I can see why he wouldn't want that.

Personally I think its better for the youth academy and their reputation to let go of guys we can't give a fair shot too.  Because when kids are deciding between us, NYCFC, PDA, etc. we can tell them that if it doesn't work out we will let you go to another team.  And if we get the premier talent in this region we will be fine.  Najem may end up being a star but I don't see that happening with our team factoring our needs and his age.

I think this is key.  At some point RB is going to be competing with City for Academy players.  RB isn't going to hold them hostage if they want to move to Europe (Miazga), RB will move veteran talent for MLS-ready guys (Dax for Davis), and they'll also let them go to another MLS team before they make them sit behind 4-5 other players (Najem).

Admas $65/81K

Allen $62/62k

Davis $90/107K

Etienee 51/56K

Lade $62/65K

Muyl $62/65K

Meara ~65K

I could see there arguement if they were trying to remain internally consistent with other HGP.

Hard to say more wihtout knowledge of the exact back and forth on the negotiation and how they rated him and what they did/did not tell him wrt to how he stacked up to the HGP.

Interesting to see what Philly signed him for.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

I know his career has been a little rocky with injuries but I can't believe he's still making a rookie salary, dude needs a better agent.
