If losing Connor Lade is the worst aspect of this offseason then I'll consider it a massive success.

This whole thing is nonsense. Los Angeles doesn't need 2 teams, they already have enough teams in that city that don't get enough support. They should have just moved the Galaxy to the new stadium.

Why would a Galaxy fan who has seen 5 MLS cups plus everything else they won ever switch to a new team? Dumb.

I don't think the idea is to convert Galaxy fans.  The idea is to get new fans into MLS, like what happened with Boy City.

Protecting a player isn't 100% about value. It's a lot about predicting who will be taken and not taken.  Escobar was brutal last season.  I know there is reason to believe he'll get better and that's why I'm not hating the fact that he's still on the team but there were some concerns.  And I'm not sure I love Escobar's upside.  He's small and he's not overly fast.  He reads the game decently well so that's a positive and also has a bomb of a shot which could be useful at times.  In general though I'm not sure I love CB's who are smaller and not great in the air in this league.

As for Lade, he's not a perfect player but he's a great team guy and a solid MLS player.  He's also cheap which makes him a very likely selection in an expansion draft.

It's a lot easier to sell Escobar as a significant coup for LAFC than Lade. Lade is inherently more valuable to us than any other team. Would be surprised if he's taken away but would bet good money Escobar would have been taken if available. Obviously an unprovable statement but I'm guessing there's a reason he was protected in the first place.

On loan, takes an international slot, not cheap, likely away from pre-season camp for WC duties, and unproven in MLS.

I'll grant you the others, but it's 95k vs 93k in terms of salary per the MLS players report.

Good catch - I thought he was along the lines of Keita's $250

There's a lot of good players available for this draft.

We have three that I could see us losing.  I think Lade being the most likely.

More than Keita?

More than Keita?

Ya, Keita is up there but for some reason I think it's too obvious.  Like when they chose to expose him there was an obvious connection to Bradley. The first thought had to be that Bradley could take him so maybe there was a discussion behind closed doors with LAFC and they have a good idea that Bradley won't take him.    Or in the 6 months he was here, we got as far as deciding we could lose him and there is already an understanding that Bradley is going to take him.  My gut says they aren't interested so I'll stick with Lade as my guess.

But looking at the list that's available, I'm not even sure they'd take Lade.  There are some good options that would be considered ahead of Lade, especially at that position.

Edit: And something else looking at the list is that it was a waste of time to protect Meara.  There are just so many good keepers.  Atiinella and Irwin are even exposed.

Lade won't get taken. It's too easy to dismiss him as too small and not technically impressive. Plus, he's coming off a big injury. Same with Collin: He hasn't been able to stay healthy. He might be a useful player, but when was the last time he had an injury-free season?

(For the record, I like Lade a lot.)

Keita is the choice even if it's "too obvious." It could be that Hamlett and Marsch just aren't as impressed by him seeing him up close. It could be that they have some kind of handshake deal in place, after all Marsch and Bradley are close. It could be that they intend to pay LAFC off with one of the many flavors of allocation money or draft picks or homegrown rights or something.

There are reports, too, that LAFC is basically going to turn this into the extortion draft, by flipping picks for allocation money or taking pay offs not to pick anybody. In that light, if they take somebody they'll be damn sure he's either going to be a contributor or have resale value. I think Keita is good, but I don't see anybody else in MLS salivating at the chance to get him. Most teams just haven't seen him.

DC did briefly. They and us saw one of the best assists of the RBNY season.

If the coaching staff isn't sold on Keita, they may see this as a good opportunity to free up the international roster slot so they can bring someone else in before the season starts.
