Giovinco?   How can he help them?  Players like him just cause teams to be unbalanced.  They don't help a team succeed as a team.

For what is worth, Toronto is ahead of us right now by 2 points with a game in hand.  If their defense is susceptible, then ours is a laughingstock.  Long season I know...

Wait til they have Bradley and Jozy fit and playing full time... glad we don't have to deal with the distraction of big money players here. Love that balance.

As someone who A) didn't care for the previous owners and B) likes the Red Bull product and brand, I agree 100%, especially in a market like NYC.   I can understand small market clubs having modest ambition, taking a moneyball approach.  Not here.

To rename a team after your company, kit the players out in your corporate logo, cross-promote the shit out of the drink and other "active lifestyle" interests that have nothing to do with soccer, and THEN run the team on the cheap takes a lot of fucking nerve.

If we're gonna be run on the cheap, at least give us a respectable fucking name and look, assholes.

When this season is done, I don't intend to renew for next season. I wouldn't have renewed for this season if I knew that Red Bull was going to torpedo everything good they did over the past two seasons. Red Bull has no intention of fielding a competitive team and I could get any tickets I wanted through Stub Hub and GroupOn anyway (even that stupid Champions Cup tournament). I don't see why I should give them any of my hard-earned money for this product.

That's where we're going to be focusing our efforts on next. We want to make a big dent in the ST numbers for next year. Right now, we've been letting the teams results speak for itself. Most people want to run Curtis out of town, many are warming up to the idea of having a new owner.

Hopefully the combination of the empty seats and mass giveaways this season has made it easier for people to part with the small ST perks. Each year the value in being a ST holder is poor as it is. I don't think you're saving money.

If we don't sign any real designated players, which is looking like we won't that will definitely be the final nail in the coffin with my decision and I was already planning on not renewing anyway. I'll still follow and go to some games but until the front office and ownership actually shows they care about fielding a competitive team there is no reason to have full season tickets.

The fact that they did this in a year when they should have been going all out with fielding a good team and marketing the hell out of the team because of it being nycfc first year makes this even more infuriating.

They really couldn't have fucked up this year more. What a shame.

So just to play devil's advocate a bit, is it possible the RB brass saw the moneyball movie, and was convinced by Curtis (and his brilliant political science and sociology training) that this was the way to go for this season?  The premise of moneyball is not just cheapness, but winning by finding unrecognized value through statistical analysis.

Because the only other explanation is that Red Bull is either so clueless or so doesn't care about its brand that they allow it to be so poorly represented.  Someone said above it takes a lot of nerve.  It's more like it doesn't make any sense.   How does it sell soda cans to have your logo on the shirt of a bunch of sad sack cheap ass losers?  In New York City of all places?

(no disrespect meant to the guys wearing the shirts. The team is not completely shit yet, but it looks like its heading there from here...)

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

I think we've moved past advertisement and into investment.

Eventually MLS teams will be worth a lot of money (very long term). If you can turn a slight profit (via sponsors and friendlies) or keep losses to a minimum, eventually this will be a great asset.

Is there any in this rout with authority to treat with me? Or indeed with wit to understand me?

The plan was always to go cheaper, younger, and more local after Henry retired, and it seems that decision was made well before Curtis was even in the picture. Curtis didn't convince the brass of this approach, he was hired because he fit the approach.

Pretty good article from Ives about it, with this quote from Petke:

“I don’t think I’m ready to talk about that right now, but we have a very good plan for the future, and it is going to take understanding from our fan base, understanding from the media perhaps,” said Petke. “We want to build something, I want to build something, and I think that we have a good idea of how to do that.”

Basically they're trying to copy what RSL and KC have been doing instead of trying to keep up with LA and Seattle.

a fair point, the price of a new franchise is already at least doubled since RB bought in.

Nonetheless, a strong season ticket base, a full stadium and higher advertising revenue all increase the value of a sports property, and all are improved by putting a winning product on the field.

But i guess its also possible to go the LA clippers route and be an irrelevant second fiddle laughingstock for decades until the league is so popular that even the shittiest franchises are worth billions.
