I think a lot of people wouldnt care too much if things were followed through on during this offseason.

Promises to fix things, spend $$, if the roster was improved to a level that gave fans confidence that they could compete at the top, the comments wouldn't hit as hard.

Its harder to trust the process when a plan doesnt get followed through on or communicated to the fans.

agree

different people different processes.

Plan is not transparent but clear and includes all the hires Theiwell, scout, analytics, academy director.

Execution is lacking. Options after option #1 lacking as well.

don't get me wrong - I wanted us to sign Rudolfo Pizarro more than anyone as I think that guy is awesome player.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Would Armas or Hamlett still have a job if either of them did what you suggested?  That's not to say Armas is getting enough out of what he has or that Hamlett is doing a good job with the resources he is given.  I don't think either deserve a passing grade.

Both guys are only in their current positions because Marsch put them there before he left.  I can't see Armas or Hamlett ever getting another MLS job head coaching or running a team.  This is it for them. We really can't expect them to get up there and say the owners suck and aren't providing RBNY with the funds needed to sign the players needed to compete for MLS Cup.

I don't know if either would still have a job if they said things like that.

But as it stands now it looks like there's a good chance they are going to get fired anyway.

So whether Armas speaks up or not, it might not matter in terms of his future here. It sure would help with the fans though.

Agree. I think Armas is a bad coach, not a bad guy. I dont think hes shoveling this shit to fool us, I think hes shoveling it to fool his players.

Trying to fool players. Thats even worse. Cant get guys to play for you if your trying to fool them.

His job is to put players in best position to win. Because hes a bad coach he is incapable of doing that.

I just meant he's trying to instill confidence in them, by saying they're better than they probably are.  I didn't mean he's being devious.  We do agree that he's probably not the right guy to put them in the best position to win.

Fooling players is 80% of a coaches job

Is that a corollary of the 20/80 rule?

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

It is coach speak, sure.

But

1) the organization has said that we are trying to compete for MLS Cup and now we are backtracking on that.

2) the coach's ability is questionable at best (and I've defended him often)

3) the coach is probably lucky to have a job

4) he seems like a shill for corporate that knows #2 and #3

so...

the fanbase has every right to take their ire out on him for these comments

Look folks, I was the first one to defecate all over Armas'  mouth for atrocious coaching during play-offs, overplaying Buck, not activating Murillo, or bringing 3 forwards, including injured White and useless BWP, instead of an extra midfielder. But in this case, he was just being honest. We just lost Robles, Lawrence, Murillo, 3 key starters (or should be starters in Murillo's case). Yes, we maintained Sims, but failed to bring anyone new of proven value. We did get a back-up GK for Meara and a RB who was a back-up in German Div II, but we lost a lot of proven talent and didn't really get much in return. And we finished #6 last year. So, yeah, baring some miracles or injection of talent later, I can't blame Armas for not exactly saying we will be winning the Cup this year.

I don't agree with 1).  Saying he's not thinking about the playoffs or MLS Cup doesn't mean that's not the goal.  He's saying they're focused on the next game (or practice).  A lot of coaches much better than Armas have said similar things.  I feel like Belichick always turns away questions about the playoffs or Super Bowl and puts the emphasis on the next game.  Granted, we are talking apples and orange seeds here, as Belichick is likely the greatest NFL coach of all time and Armas probably couldn't break the top 5 Metro coach list.

Sure, but I think my overall point is it's pretty fair for people not to give anyone within this organization the benefit of the doubt right now.

Of course, I guess I just view these quotes as the least of his sins as the coach, especially considering I dont know what else he could say without alienating his players. Also, I give him a pass HERE because hes so inarticulate, Im not sure what he says is aways what he means.
