Late January is the worst time of every offseason for fan discourse. Lots of people expecting major signings through December and January get especially riled up and we're still weeks away from actual soccer to talk about. Although I gotta say not having any meaningful content from camp doesn't help.

less than 4 weeks to first kick (who will kick the ball who knows but first kick none the less!!!)

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

I want to own a beach house but I also recognize the realities of my situation and the need build my finances incrementally so I can best set myself up to eventually achieve my goal of one day owning a beach house. Or I could just make a bunch of high-risk investments to try to get my beach house ASAP. What could go wrong?

I get what you are saying, but I think a more apt analogy would be if Bill Gates wanted to own yachts in every major city. He wants to use them when he is in town, and then rent them out to turn a profit when he is out of town.

Bill Gates hires someone who knows how to maintain and charter a yacht fleet. He hires someone to assess yacht rental market and estimated his usage per year. He then buys the best mega yacht he can while still being confident he will turn a profit. Bill Gates does not buy a Boston Whaler and work his way up. He can accelerate the timetable to build something.

Our owner is not pauper. Personally, I think (hope) Thelwell is the competent yacht admiral we've needed and the corner is turning. We'll see. But there is zero reason not to plan for hardware in 2022. Build the roster to acquire hardware.

This offseason is making me crazy, and I half wrote this in response to MF's comment.

Thats what Im saying.

Bill Gates wakes up everyday with the sole purpose of dominating the yacht market.

Except Thelwell doesn't have access to Bill Gates money and never will.

Leipzig and Salzburg get to spend because 1) they generally qualify for European competition which has a lucrative return on incoming $$$ from TV rights, and 2) because they've proven they can turn a profit on selling players after a few years. These teams are not spending money only because the owner is "rich".

RBNY will never get $$$ from 1) above; there is very little money comparatively speaking from the CCL. And the jury is still out on 2); the Tyler Adams transfer was a start, but generally we've let players walk for free which is absurd.

Buy lottery tickets!
And remember, if you win it was my idea!

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Conveniently misses the period where RBL did spend more than everyone up to Bundesliga, and then more than anyone but Bayern/Borussia. Obviously there is no comparable payoff in TV and CCL vs CL prize money (yet??), but if RB spent a few million a year out of pocket and became the premier feanchise in MLS, surely the return in gate receipts and intangible RB exposure would be worth it?

Clearly they've decided against it for whatever reason (maybe it _isn't worth it_ even if successful; maybe the risk of failing is too great given MLS parity, etc), but it's not unreasonable to ask why a billionaire owner isn't willing to loosen the purse strings when it could bring success and profitable returns. Other MLS owners are doing it. Maybe they are in it for fun and titles while being happy to take losses while RB are the smart ones spending optimally, but maybe not.

Quick question: where is this beach house located?  Bay Head or Miami?

In the lower German leagues, gaining promotion is the end goal, which gives you access to more $$$. Where is the comparable goal of promotion in MLS? There is none. Spending more than your peers might guarantee you finish first in MLS, but it won't get you any closer to a big payday by 1) joining a higher division, or 2) European tournaments

Yeah, I realize that and said as much. There's still money to be made by spending more on players and doing better, I think. Ot at least the net result wouldn't be worse than it has been, both on the pitch and financially.

RB seems to agree to an extent, given they are happy to spend on a GM, a coach, young prospects, as well as investing in infrastructure. Not sure why spending a couple of extra million a year on low-level DP guys is so out of the question.
