Earl Schieb quoted me $800. That's a little rich for my blood.

Get another quote.
I've not done a car, but I have painted a couple of motorcycles.
To do it yourself, and not have the car look like it, you're gonna need indoor space large enough to manuver around in (two car garage), that is CLEAN, SPOTLESS and (reasonably) DUST-FREE. The space must also be warm. You can rent a compressor and spray gun, but a little guidence and/or experience would go a long way towards making it look good. You're on the 'net. Do some footwork to find out about it.
It Can Be Done.

KRYLON?!? you crazy. Just go to PepBoys and get soem automotive paint. Or you can go to a paint place, when my dad painted his old car(no longer have it) it looked bad just cause we didn't sand the fucker and no clear coat. But this place called Terrece Paints. It was like $95 for all the paint and we borrowed a paint gun from my dads friend, but i think you can rent them from like Home Depot for like free or $20.There's also the and 50$ worth of krylon and a cube of old style method...

These are good suggestions.

Hell, you can rattle-ball a car for less than $50, even if you go with the big buck Krylon stuff.

The paint held up through the winter and showed no signs of peeling. It was very awesome until the car broke.

The only example I have on-hand, at the moment:
(it was originally forest green, btw)
Not that you'd likely consider it for personal use, but for reference, that one was for Six Flags, so we charged them around $4800 (iirc)...
I could probably do it for around $1200 or so...maybe less, if I wanted to...
sow~ If S8 (or any other group, for that matter) ever does get an "official" vehicle, I'd be willing to do it up nice...and if you get a sponsor or two lined up, you could probably get it done free...just sayin'...
