In Topic: Shield will NOW be awarded this year

Not gonna lie, after getting abused for a week by Toronto fans, that 5-0 Philly win on the 11 year anniversary of our 5-0 win against them in 2009 is making me smile.

In Topic: Some people don't think of MLS

Clearly a bunch of people here do. I was 11 years old in 2001, didn't become a fan of the sport until 2006, and even I know that the season was cut short in 2001.

Don't project your ignorance onto everyone else. And don't excuse the ignorance of the people in charge of the Supporters Shield who should absolutely know better.

I was 11 too. I know the season was cut short, but I didn't know Miami played one less game. This is obviously a learning experience for me and the rest of the board and we will gladly step aside if anyone else wants to take over and run the foundation better. Unfortunately, like any volunteer organization, we already struggle to find enough people willing to run to fill the open seats, let alone have an election. Hopefully our fuck up lights a fire under some people and they get rid of us and show us how it's done.

How could the committee not know that fact about their own award? That's less than 20 years ago.

I have no excuse for not knowing this. I can name almost every Shield winner off the top of my head, but I never even thought to check if there was any controversial winner due to unbalanced games played schedule. I only started up watching MLS in 2009, it's no excuse, but it's the truth.

Looks like they are realizing they made the wrong decision after all the blowback lol...

The Supporters' Shield Foundation board would like to provide an update:

We are currently holding meetings with supporter group representatives about the original decision in light of new information and feedback we have received.

A public update will be forthcoming.

Honestly, the reason we're discussing it again is because of the reaction to the announcement, but even more than that, it's because Dan posted that it was awarded in 2001 even though not everyone played the same number of games. I'll be honest and say I did not know that and that changed my mind on it. That's precedent in my opinion.

Our original idea was to protect the integrity of the Shield due to an imbalanced number of games played. Now that we know this has been handled already, we are looking at it again.

Presumably the actual reason is the fact that there will be Western conference teams who will not play their full schedule, but there has to be language about "no fans in the stands" etc etc to avoid making it look like they're calling this season a joke (which it is).

Just my 2 cents.

Exactly this. I'm one of the Shield board members. We had language about that in the statement MLS asked us to take it out and then proceeded to throw us under the bus. For the record, I didn't want it taken out, but was overruled.
