Entering dead horse territory (as I am wont to do), but I do think the naming of the team after a soda company plays a roll. RBNY is selling a sub-par roster, with boring play, boring inept games, and an identity of being a soda company advertisement at their core (as evidenced by the crest). They could overcome the soda company advertisement if they had a great roster, exciting play and games. But you can't win over fans if the name feels minor league and the roster and play are minor league. Why should anyone care?
The Jets over the last few years come to mind as a counterfactual. Jets havent made the playoffs in over a decade - the play was crappy, and they did not look good, but people were still fans. Woody Johnson might own the team and be viewed as lame politically, but the Jets are not Woody Johnson. He didn't rename the team the "New York Woodies" The Jets are something separate and sacred, independent of who owns them or how shitty they might be. US fans see total branding like on the Red Bull team, and immediately think I am not tethering my passion, hopes, and time on something that feels so inorganic AND isn't good and seemingly isn't trying to be good.
I really think RBNY had some of the best, smartest, important fans in all of MLS, and RB global is just fucking abusing them, until they all disappear.
