I think it makes sense, one vet in each of the position pools. You need good 'locker room guys' in every squad.

I think that is more about off the field persona and leadership so maybe they all or whoever made the call things Ream and Bedoya are good locker room guys.

As much as most of us want to never cap anyone born before 1990 we need some leadership, cause the reality is we're playing the reigning European champions and if they play well aka Ronaldo brings his a game we we get hammer 4/5-0.

thought i read that Portugal was also bringing a "B" squad - no Ronaldo/Nani/etc.

It's a friendly. Ronaldo isn't even called up. If Portugal wins 4/5-0 who cares? If the USMNT wins, it doesn't mean anything. All it should be about is an opportunity for the young guys to try and prove themselves and for them to have the opportunity to play against some solid competition.

MIDFIELDERS ... Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls; 0/0)

Congrats! Hope he gets on the field.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Just to be clear I'm 100% on the play the kids, I'm just guessing as to why these guys were brought in.

If I was the coach I'd of brought some more of those u17 World Cup guys, weah, Carlton, etc.

Great to see a trio of academy kids:
Miazga, Adams and Agudelo.
Ream also there.

Part of the problem with this past cycle was that coaches were still trying to figure out what they had in players during important games. Look at how long it took for Sacha and Dax to get a run of games, for instance. The likes of Weah and Sargent will still be very young in 2-3 years. There's no rush. And they'll get looks at lower levels (with some USMNT games sprinkled in I'm sure). But they absolutely should be giving a lot of chances to guys like Dwyer, Acosta, and Rowe right now. Those are guys who need to be evaluated right now.

By that logic Pulisic wouldn't have been given a real chance until next cycle probably, and he was the our best player and pretty much the only bright point in the past campaign. Give everyone that will be around in 5 years a chance. Good players can be good at 17-18-19, there shouldn't be a de facto waiting period because people are "too" young.

So because Tyler Adams is a monster at age 18, it means we should be flooding RBNY with 18-year-old's in the starting XI? Or is Tyler Adams the exception to the rule?

Anyway, my point wasn't that they should get 0 caps. My point was that there's no rush, and you can't have all teenagers in every game. There's a lot of youth in this roster. Next time around some of them will be left out while guys like Weah get a chance.

I objected specifically to "they'll still be very young in 2-3 years". Potential high ceiling guys should be given chances much sooner than that, which we seem to agree on.

U17 kids aren't going to be the core of the 2022 WC cycle.  They are children.  Let them find their professional footing before they launch headlong into senior national team appearances.  Hell, let them play with the U20s first.

Needless to say, I think calling up Sargent is a mistake.

Psyched for Adams though!

Pulisic at least had 5 first-team appearances before his first call-up, and had 7 national team caps and another 8 Dortmund appearances before his first USMNT start.

A guy like Sargent should be exposed to quality players. That is how they will get better. He destroyed teams 3-4 times older in the u20 tournament. Why not see what he can do with a quality national team?
