I think this is utter bullshit. Then again, I''m one of those who wasn't fond of "They shot the wrong Diallo" chants as well.

Taking your Compton example, for the most part, those involved in Compton shootings are gang members themselves, and while the conditions which factor into their development/behavior is utterly tragic, it's still fairly tough to muster much sympathy for them. But if there were chants about specific shooting incidents involving innocents, I'd hope most would think that was way over the line.

No, this is bull shit.

First of all, if you find it fairly tough to muster sympathy for a shooting victim, in a gang or not, I'm not sure what to tell you (note: this isn't to imply that all murder victims are good people, or deserve sympathy; but, my God, that is an AWFULLY broad brush you are using, which isn't too surprising or uncommon considering whom you are painting with it). A lot of these "gang members" are fucking kids, and the gangs are the only families they know. But whatever; that point is neither here nor there.

This March was the first murder-free month in Newark in 40 years! Forty fucking years! Just by the sheer statistics of it, I guaran-fucking-tee you that a shitload more of those people were innocent bystanders than were even affected by Columbine. Just in the past couple years, I can think of three or four innocent kids who were murdered in Hempstead, where I used to work.

Do you really think the vast majority of people who are bitching on this board, would give two shits if songs were sung about how DC is overrun by gangs or is (was) the murder capital of the country? Would people find it so offensive if another team came in here and sung about Newark, or Hempstead, or Brooklyn, being such a deadly place?

These murders (although overplayed in the media) are fucking real. I've been to community meetings where people talk about having to sleep on the floor at night because they are scared of bullets coming into their windows. This affects people, every single fucking day, just as much as Columbine affected anybody.

Would people be so offended if opposing fans sung about Newark's murder rate when they come in here? Some may. Most probably wouldn't. Why? Because they're fucking words at a fucking soccer game, not actions that affect people's lives in any way. And as long as the people being sung about don't look like us, who really cares anyway?
35th minute- Red Bulls fans back on the East Coast should know that the 50 Red Bulls fans are making more noise than the rest of the stadium right now.

"I can't believe you guys sing the whole game," -- DC security guard, who apparently isn't used to that from supporters...

The truth.

Saved me a few minutes.

To say "it doesn't have an effect on opposing players, so it's not worth it" is a worthwhile argument.
But all that other shit is nonsense.

I shall write my life as if it was a love story. For who is to say it is not? It began with a love of football, and it will end the same.

Spent some time re-reading through this thread and couldn't help but notice all the names of folks who no longer post here for whatever reason, quite a few of them who made these boards a daily must visit in the past. Such is life.
