Doesnt it fill you with faith that our SD struggled this much to bring back someone who was on the team at the end of last season. It might take until March 1st to make another signing

Getting Sims back feels like hitting a par after a series of bogeys. Not like it deserves crazy amounts of credit or praise, but criticizing him for doing the job also seems unnecessary.

#1359317 RBG strategy/philosophy for NY

Posted by ivo on 16 January 2020 - 05:42 PM

That's the thing; there's literally no incentive for RBG to spend more.  They invested in the stadium, they invested in big stars like TH14 and Rafa. Go back and look at highlight videos from the TH14 era. We bitch about attendance now, but from the eyeball test, it was much worse back then, even with the stars and the stadium. They cut down on big star spending and we still won 2 shields and were competitive enough.  They also got brand exposure via Concacaf Champions League.

What would spending now do for them that wasn't accomplished by spending back then? There is no financial incentive to winning an MLS Cup. I don't think the league generates enough broadcast revenue for the team to say "you know what, let me drop an extra $10M on transfer fees so that I can win MLS Cup", because at the end of the day - they will just be out those $10M.  It's pretty clear that their focus now is to go full Salzburg - get young, cheap players, and flip them for a profit.  Not to buy a $10M young South American player to flip. Certainly not to buy a 30+ year old international player so that we can win a cup.

The problem seems to be that people are conflating "Red Bull" the global brand, and "Red Bull New York".  Yes $10M is a rounding error to "Red Bull" the global brand, but in the real world, it doesn't work that way. "Red Bull New York" has its own budgets, targets, metrics, etc. to hit. And $10M is in fact a big deal for them. If the $10M won't get them a financial return, they won't spend it just to placate our dwindling fan base.

There's a wide range of players between 0 dollars and 10M young South Americans. I'm just saying get more Kakus and, hell, more Verons and Jorgensens at 1-2-3M a pop. You're way more likely to profit on a guy like that with a lot of upside (even if some obviously flop) than an Alex Muyl. Murillo/Taxi/CCJ are more examples of success stories - keep getting more of those guys. The recent pace of 0-1 high upside signings a year won't cut it.

Salzburg is the perfect model, in  fact! They've sold players for over 100M in the past 5 years, but they've presumably recruited from beyond the Salzburg neighborhoods where their GM has friends or relatives.

#1359216 Tyler Adams plays for RBL

Interesting read. While we sit and wait to sign nobody.

Thanks for the link.

""We're all just a bunch of young guys running around on the pitch," Adams says. "We want to play a brand of soccer with the same kind of energy that Red Bull is known for."

Whether he was referring to the company's approach to football across its various teams or to the caffeinated drink was unclear."

Reminiscent of Jesse's "this is an energy drink" debacle.

I'm also not getting excited at all about prospects developing here considering the way they handled the Tyler Adams situation. What's to say the second Tolkin becomes good they won't "sell" him to Salzburg/Leipzig the same way they did with Adams, and give RBNY nothing in return?

Pretty sure we got the maximum possible allocation money amount from Adams? That it wasn't used well is a separate problem.

#1359040 Brought back Sims

I see players return from loan in the prem and play immediately, all the time.

Also, the Premier League transfer window has been open since Jan 1.

#1358931 John Tolkin

So basically everything you don't agree with is somehow trolling?

There are already enough scrubs on the first team.

You can't have enough depth/youth. These guys can always be loaned to RB2 if necessary.

We obviously ALSO need quality starter signings, but being annoyed by signing U17 national team players is odd. Were you also annoyed when they signed Tyler Adams at 16?

We will see.  I am planning to go to the away march.

Just saying that the people for whom Robles would be a draw are already going to the games.

Spending doesnt GUARANTEE an MLS cup, but you cant win MLS cup WITHOUT spending these days.

The days of cheap-o teams getting hot and winning it are over.

And the shield you refer to had a LOT to do with Marsch. Like...a lot.

To win MLS Cup you need a good coach, health, spending, big game players, and luck. Some of those things are out of your control. Some are not.

Was just pointing out that the premise of the original post (can't win trophies with a lot of players making <150k) was disproved just a season ago. Marsch and players like Long/Adams being on <150k salaries but playing like DPs were absolutely huge factors, no question about it.

If  a team is good enough to win a shield, it's good enough to win an MLS Cup. Obviously no guarantees, especially in our case.

Theoretically, TAM and DP and other present "incentives and disincentives" including salary caps could no longer be valid.  Makes sense to wait.

It's a nice excuse, hopefully not just an excuse. Not stopping many other teams.

How many days to CBA settlement?  They've dumped their big salaries and I'm guessing nothing is going to happen unless there's a CBA agreement.  They don't want to get saddled with big salaries if there is no play.

Don't salaries just stop being paid out if there's no CBA?

And sure, waiting to see what the exact CBA is before making big moves makes sense, though I don't think that's what stopping us from making ANY signings.

#1358187 Schedule 2020

Posted by ivo on 20 December 2019 - 09:58 AM

My biggest annoyance is the March 28th 1pm home game when the Devils are playing at home at 2pm. I'll just sell or use a buyback on my Devils tickets but would be nice if the teams didn't schedule games at the same time when they are so close to each other distance wise.

Seriously, how difficult is it to check a schedule and move a game 2 or 3 hours back?

#1358140 #3 team of decade in MLS

Posted by ivo on 18 December 2019 - 01:41 PM

Hell of a decade. Lot of changes in player personnel, coaches, front office, but we kept consistency on the field with winning, making the playoffs and Supporters Shields!  We should be pleased.  I know we're upset as of late, but looking back at ten years, we should be pleased.

To think that these will be the "good old times" one day... Hopefully we get an MLS Cup along the way.

#1358104 RBG strategy/philosophy for NY

Posted by ivo on 17 December 2019 - 12:49 PM

Good article on the RB philosophy... even Salzburg is a selling club. https://soccer.nbcsp...mino-transfers/

"Selling club" seems to have a negative connotation among many fans. Weird when there are maybe 10 clubs in the world that wouldn't be a selling club when a bigger fish comes in with a bid.

If you're not a selling club (and are not Real/Barca/Bayern/City/etc), it just means no one wants to buy your players, hardly a great achievement/compliment.
