For sale: one sightly used soccer team in northern New Jersey that has a tarnished reputation, a new coach, a new sporting director and a really neat modern stadium. Willing to listen to any offer over $220 million. Please call Salzburg, Austria immediately.
If you needed any more ammunition to determine whether the Red Bull mothership had any serious interest in the Red Bulls, you only have to look at Exhibit A:
The sacking of popular head coach Mike Petke Wednesday. All Petke did was guide the Red Bulls to their first Supporters Shield title in 2013 and within a goal of MLS Cup less than two months ago.
Petke, who for some reason did not fit into the plans of new sporting director Ali Curtis, was shown the door. Curtis was signed to a one-year contract, which says a lot about Red Bull's future with the Red Bulls.
According to soccer sources, good sources that I have spoken to around the United States, it comes down to this:
Red Bull has given up on the New York Red Bulls.
Yep, they are up for sale.
SI.com reported that bit of information a few months back, but more and more sources are coming out of the woodwork to say so.
