hanging out with Charlie Davies = 1 life and 2 years in prison
oh but that's cool he scored two goals. that's way more meaningful.
Of course goals in a soccer game aren't as important in the grand scheme of things as life-altering or -ending tragedies. Nothing I've read has convinced me that Davies was at fault for anyone else's injuries, though. As I understand it, he chose to get in a car with a driver who would have known she shouldn't have been driving. Stupid move, which he knows. He's responsible for that, and for its consequences to his health and career, and maybe carries some secondary culpability for not trying to discourage the driver from taking off. I don't think he's ultimately responsible for the fact that his friend senselessly lost her life, and I am sure that whatever negligence he displayed was the result of everyday idiocy rather than malice or a lack of caring. In terms of the outcome, of course, that's not relevant. He knows that, too, and is sensitive to all of this, I'm pretty convinced of that.
In other words, I feel like there's room in this case both to acknowledge and sympathize with the family of the girl who passed away, and to be sad about that, and also to be supportive of and even happy about Charlie Davies' efforts to reestablish himself as a player.
Not trying to pick a fight, and I certainly understand that some people probably don't feel that way, and I would be interested to hear reasonable disagreement. Maybe elsewhere, though, as I'm afraid this reply is already too much of a thread derailment...
