I always said that there are certian older players that you need to make exceptions for in this new MLS era. Ibra is one of them of course.

Ribery is another exception IMO. The guy has been lights out since the 2006 world cup consistently playing for a top 5 club in the world.

5 year plan

Also always hurt. But i think people need to chill with crowning Ibra, it was a insane game with the keeper being out of positioning on the first goal and himself being offside on the second goal. Also a bit of LAFC celebrating the win in the 60th minute.

Defending and goalkeeping were abysmal this game. Truly horrid. Of course you need to have talent on the field to take ADVANTAGE of that (which a lot of MLS players dont), but Im taking this game with a grain of salt. I want to see what Ibra does for a few more matches.

Still cBr is right until MLS plays at such a maddening pace like EPL which plays at such a fast pace that it's speed and physicality cancel out raw talent then there will always be a place in MLS for players that's a class above the rest in technique and talent
I just want Metro to win a title sometime in my lifetime.

Yes, the goalie was out of the box on that Ibra strike, but the vision to see it and the skill to strike it like that (and seeing it live, it looked like it went right down the middle of the goal,) are pretty rare in MLS.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Ibra has been a damn good player for club and country wherever he has gone. Why are people surprised he can do it here too? He is a difference maker.

The one Twellman tweeted? If so, that angle is pretty misleading.

This one?  How's that misleading?  Like, it's a little bit angled, but not in some wildly distorted way.

it seemed on-line with the grass pattern or whatever it is the groundskeepers do to make the grass look the way it does.

Yeah, just think maybe some people were focused on the defenders and not the ball.  Z was onside with the ball.

I watched some writers say that he was clearly offside and I really don't know what they were looking at.  At the very least, it's extremely close.  The ball is the only thing that mattered there.

How is it not misleading? :) The grass line doesn't even seem to be straight. Just a pointless zoomed angle that doesn't give a definitive answer to anything.

From the wide angle you can see the reference to the ball, and yes, he's close to being level with the ball, but I've seen a photo drawing a line connecting Zlatan and the ball and parts of his body are offside. Sorry I can't find that right now.

Now, it's far from easy to call it, especially live, and giving the benefit of the doubt to the attacker when it's close is perfectly fine. But to not even review it with VAR or to claim it's a clear onside decision based on that unconvincing angle seems a bit too generous.

That volley for the third goal was amazing. I'd rather focus on that when lauding Zlatan for his debut, not on the close call for the winner.

VAR wasn't meant for close calls like that.  It's for the glaring mistakes.  Unfortunately MLS doesn't seem to understand that.  If VAR was just used for the glaring mistakes, then we have something decent.

Even Rivas' penalty pissed me off.  That exact play happens on at least half of the set pieces we watch but of course Metro is lucky enough to be called for it.  Was it a foul? Yes.  Does it happen far more often and is rarely called? Yes.

I can agree with that view. Last on the Zlatan goal, I think I was mostly annoyed by nothing about the goal being a close call in any of the 3-4 articles I happened to see on it. It's still a great story! That volley will be in MLS highlights forever, and a win is a win! Mentioning a slight controversy on a marginal call doesn't take anything away from a great debut.

Re the Rivas penalty, I think the review was just on the spot of the foul. Ref whistled for a foul and either was then told of the foul continuing in the box, or he himself requested a review of the spot of the foul to turn it into a penalty. While it is annoying that we get that call against us and many teams don't, it was a pretty blatant hold from Rivas, and I'm fine if it sets a precedent and gets called more often in the future. In that sense, the point of the VAR is not only fixing glaring mistakes like you say, but also forcing players to clean up their play because they will know stuff will (or may) be called more often.
