Nothing says REAL NEW YORK! in 2020 like a project that will accelerate the transformation of the South Bronx into yet another working class NYC community destroyed to make room for sterile, quietly racist middle American transplants who turn their noses up at the locals until we're cleaned out for their delicate, suburbanized tastes.

What a load of crap.

Sure, I'm just from and live in Brooklyn and work in 8 segregated schools in gentrifying neighborhoods here. You know what you know, I know what I see and hear.

Cool story. Were those neighborhoods heaven on earth before gentrification? Do you know what the crime stats were, before you helicoptered in to save the day?

How many people live in those parking garages or the factory? Seriously. They arent leveling the neighborhood and evicting people. Im not sure how building a stadium, school, and some retail will destroy the character of the neighborhood.

Gentrified neighborhoods in Brooklyn (and New Jersey, Queens and perhaps the South Bronx) are a result of these areas being close to the economic hub of Manhattan. Some people think it is good that the economic hub is expanding because it brings in tax money and employment. Others who have been or will be pushed out of their neighborhood are unhappy. Obviously this is the Amazon HQ debate.

But keeping Amazon out is not going to stop gentrification. The areas surrounding Manhattan will keep getting gentrified by the people who have high paying jobs in the expanding Manhattan economic hub. It is amazing to me that so many big businesses, including all the sports leagues, want to be in Manhattan or close by. This is in spite of the very high NYC and NYS income taxes.

Is gentrification a good or bad thing in the abstract?  That is a matter of opinion.

Does gentrification transform the character of the neighborhood?  Absolutely.  Will the character of the South Bronx be transformed dramatically in the next decade?  Almost certainly.  Will lots of current residents be unhappy?  Almost certainly.  Will building a soccer stadium be part of the transformation? Probably.

Is this "REAL NEW YORK!"?  I actually think it is. Gentrification has been the story of New York for the last 40 years.  Massive neighborhood transformations has been the story of New York for hundreds of years. Neighborhoods have constantly evolved in terms of the class and ethnicity of residents. For me, that is real New York.  Stagnation in the constant evolution of residents is what I would consider not "Real New York."
