Which side pushed this? The article notes that USSF top pair are former SUM execs, so they must believe that they can generate more income for US Soccer by operating separately from MLS.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

This is bad for MLS investor-operators because SUM is where they get the majority of their income from soccer. MLS by itself loses a ton of money.

I think they still have an arrangement with the Mexican NT.  But yeah, not good for their bottom line.
