I have a hard time figuring out if this is prestigious or not. Say Red Bulls win it. Is this considered a "major trophy" like US Open Cup or Supporter Shield? "MLS is Back" tournament sounds a bit like BS given just the name of it, if nothing else. I mean, saying we are "MLS is Back" winners just doesn't make me think - major title.

Its not prestigious at all, but better than nothing.  Hope no one gets covid during it, because they are hosting everyone - players and staff in one hotel, almost 2000 people.

Here's another solution: I'll rename "International" back to its original name... "Tournament". That covers everything which is not league, OC, or playoffs... and there no concurrency issues this year.

Just did that, "International" is renamed back to "Tournament". Now watch us miss that final 16.

Man!  I now feel bad for Osorio kids

I wonder which striker he scouted. We ended up signing Kandji a month and a half later.

We better fucking win this thing. It would be the most metro thing ever. And it would be the most prestigious cup ever if we do manage to fuck our way onto the champions pedestal.

We have a good history of winning tournaments at Disney, the 2010 preseason right?

I 'spose that we'll eventually start thinking about an ideal XI for this tournament. Not at that point yet, but I guess I'll get there.

I got the beer chilled and ready. Can't wait to see the games because it has been way  too long to not be able  cheer on Metro. So I will ready to  :pint: and enjoy Metro victories.

In each group, the top 2 teams advance. 4 of the best 6 third place finishers advance.

In a 4-team group, you have a 1/2 + (1/4 * 2/3)  = 2/3 chance to advance

In a 6-team group, you have a 1/3 + (1/6 * 2/3) = 4/9 chance to advance

Really, really not fair.

easily could have made it top half of each group advances and 3 of the best 6 remaining teams.  Though the big group in theory should have worse teams and better parity at least.

Imagine having to drag your kids around Disney in August! I know I would be looking for ways to get out of that nightmare

Agreed, that would've been a fair compromise. The only team that really seems happy about this is Nashville is whose fans generally seem pleased with a move to the East (although they'll probably go back to the West next year with Charlotte and Austin coming in).

Is there a compelling reason why they went groups of 6-4-4-4-4-4 rather than 5-5-4-4-4-4?

6 groups. Four 4-team groups and one 5-team group in both the East and the West

Nashville stays in the West and is placed in a 5-team group with Portland. They don't play each other since they already did in the regular season.

Miami is placed in a 5-team group with DC United. They don't play each other since they already did in the regular season.

Random draw now not only determines the opponents, but also what the larger groups are. Top two finishers and 4 of 6 third place finishers advance. Problem solved.
