So who will be the next coach of the Chicago Fire.
It sounded a few weeks ago like they were looking abroad, and I like that if they can bring in a really good seasoned coach. But now people are bandying about the names of all these coaches and almost coaches with ties to the fire (Soehn, Armas, Marsch).
Who will it be?

Out of curiosity, did we have a chance at Nowak before he took the Philly job?

I think the real question is - how much are our owners willing to spend? Denis was a quick fix. He was there. But I think it may be time to look outside the MLS for a coach, imho. But that will cost us. Coaching salaries are entirely up to the individual team owners and not dictated by Garber.

I don't think so, Nowak was with the Nats.

If that is the case and this is a serious rumor hmmm....according to wiki this might not be a bad thing. He sounds like he would fit right in with S8 and the Chicago Way. This league could use a shake up and he would draw fans. Too bad his style calls for the likes of Rolf and Sega and we have a lot of unprotected talent.

I put this in another thread but ill put it here again. I would also like Colin Clarke but I think he's pretty tied down in Puerto Rico.

I was talking to Flanagan about his the other night but I think getting a coach from England or Ireland who has a good track record wouldnt be the worst thing in the world. I would obviously like someone who has an indepth knowledge of the MLS but that is hard to come by.

One guy I would suggest that nobody here has heard of is Pat Fenlon.

Fenlon is only 40 years old and has won the Irish league 4 times as manager with 2 different clubs. He is currently the manager of Bohemians in Dublin. He took over last season and lead them to a league and cup double and its on course to do it again this season.

Now I know the Irish league isnt as good as the MLS but I would like everyone to take a look at his track record in European competitions:

He was the first Irish manager to guide a team to the 3rd round of the Champions League Qualifying when he was in charge of Shelbourne in 2004. They beat Croation champs Hajduk Split in the 2nd round before falling to Deportivo from Spain where they tied 0-0 at home before losing 3-0 away. This was a massive achievement.

They were knocked out of the UEFA Cup that year in the first round by Lille but managed to tie them 2-2 at home before losing 2 nil away.

Under Fenlon, Shels went UNBEATEN in 8 European home matches which is a record for any Irish club. They held teams like: Deportivo, Lille, Steaua Bucharest, Hajduk Split and Odense to draws at home which is a brilliant achievement for any Irish club.

This season in the UEFA Champions League Qualifying with Bohemians, Fenlon played against Red Bull Salzburg the Austrian champions. They managed to tie them 1-1 AWAY but lost in the 87th minute at home, again a huge achievement.

This guy is young, ambitious and very talented especially in knock out competitions (playoffs, open cup and champions league anyone?) and he has done so with a very limited budget by MLS standards.

Its a long shot but I would love him as the Fire's next head coach!

And the Fire didn't play well enough for their coach to survive. A new coach is in line. Will it be one of these?

Tom Soehn: Fired by D.C United at the end of the season. Former Fire player.

Chris Armas: Former Fire captain and assistant coach. Interesting long shot.

Richie Williams
: Interim coach of Red Bulls. Team improved greatly when he took over two-thirds of the way through the season for Juan Carlos Osorio, who resigned.

Curt Onalfo: Former coach of Kansas City, fired this season.

Martin Vasquez: Former assistant for Chivas USA, L.A. Galaxy and Bayern Munich.

I would consider Tom Soehn

according to Ives: "because Andrew Hauptman wants complete control over the team, he has announced himself as the next coach of the Chicago Fire. But it doesn't end there. Since the designated player spot is open and unfilled, Andrew proclaimed he will also be the next #10. If things go as planned during the off-season, Andell Holdings Cloning Division could have enough Andrew Hauptman's to manage the Fire, and field a whole team... full of, well, Andrew Hauptman's. "Who said, we all dream of a team of Calen Carr's?."

From Goff's Twitter

Martin Vasquez to be named Chivas USA coach tomorrow? Hmmm

Looks like Vasquez is going where everyone thought he would be.

Sampson rumors turned out to be a bit unfounded I guess.
