Portland MLS Bid Needs Section 8 Help
Posted 04 March 2009 - 05:10 PM
After months of meeting and reviewing the Merritt Paulson's proposal to remodel PGE Park into a Soccer Specific Stadium * a 18 member task force appointed by the Mayor voted unanimously to recommend to the Portland City Council to move forward with this proposal.
Next Weds, March 11th, the Portland City Council will vote on whether to approve $85 million in publicly backed bonds to remodel PGE Park and build a separate baseball stadium for our Triple AAA team. Merritt Paulson has taken the extra step of guaranteeing these bonds with his family's personal wealth in order to make this palatable to folks.
All indications from MLS is if we sort the stadium issue out, the Portland Timbers are MLS in 2011.
Right now, it is unsure whether this will pass. We think we have two votes, two undecided and one is a possible no. We need three.
What are we asking Section 8/Chicago Fans for?
We are asking you take 5 minutes to write our city councilors with a simple message:
As Chicago Fire fans we will come to Portland twice each summer and spend money and stay in hotels and in general provide a boost to the local economy. We also know and respect Portland soccer culture, Timbers Army and would love to see them in the league.
That's it. Please take a minute to write. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Sam Adams, Mayor
Commissioner of Public Utilities, Position Number 1
Commissioner of Public Works, Position Number 2
Commissioner of Public Safety, Position Number 4
Commissioner of Public Affairs, Position Number 3
*it will be stunning people, 90 year old stadium with incredible history, character, a wooden roof over all the stands, ivy etc but with modern amenities, in the heart of downtown Portland with it's own MAX Light Rail stop. No parking lots etc, think Highbury or Craven Cottage as it was built in 1923 before the neighborhood came up around it. Very urban.

We are 1 city council vote away....yes that is right "1" vote away.
If we get the majority vote (3 out of 5) we get MLS, simple as that.
2 city officials who are onboard...
2 on the fence,
1 is not so on board.
We need 3 out of 5.
Please...please, please, help us get this 1 vote, write to these people how important MLS will be for the future of Portland, and to Major League Soccer. Portland WILL not let MLS down, and it was destiny from the start.

MLS2PDX is on the final push for our bid for a yes vote, word around the campfire is that we have a good chance for this to happen, but where not letting the gas off the pedal, this is going to be our last stand on Wednesday when the city council votes. I ask of you all to please take a moment and write a few lines to city hall and help us make this happen. We still need your help!
Can't wait to meet you next July when you guys make it here and we storm that giant sh*t hole up north and humiliate the flounders yet again.
WE ARE RED WE ARE GREEN AND SH*TTLE IS IN BETWEEN.
