Gedion Zelalem has agreed a loan move from Arsenal to Rangers, initially until January but with the option for the teenage midfielder to stay for the season.

I've mixed feelings on this. However, the second he starts playing some consistent minutes, I'll add his name to a jersey...

If it's any help to you, he previously played for Olney Rangers! :D

I wonder if he will jump right into the Rangers starting lineup. I know he's a boy wonder, but 18 is still pretty young.

great touch, but holds on to the ball way too long. he'll hopefully grow out of it and play the ball quicker.

I'm not certain that he jumps straight into the starting XI, but the coach is big on youth. He had previously put together U19 programs and he has a forward thinking, progressive style.

He'll have to, with the hammer throwers in Scotland...

Rangers are sure taking their time getting back to the Scottish Prem!

Only 7 clubs in Scotland averaged more than 5,000 in home attendance last season.

8 of the 12 SPL clubs last season had average home crowds of less than 5,000.

6 of the 10 Championship clubs averaged under 3,000.

League One average home attendance was less than 1,000.

League Two just over 500.

Man, there are USL teams that put up bigger numbers than that.

Scottish football is in deep shit right now overall.  They've been in a steady downward decline for the better part of a decade.  That has coincided with Hearts, Hibs and Rangers all having major financial issues.   Celtic has no incentive to spend because they're winning the league anyway.

Scotland needs the big clubs to stay up.  That means a top flight including both Edinborough clubs, both Glasgow clubs, both Dundee's, a solid Aberdeen and a combo of Motherwell, Killie and Dunfermline to get their respective shit together.  Even with that, they need to see major improvement at the youth levels and an infusion of cash as well.

With that said, it's good for Zelalem to be in a pro environment like that.  He should benefit.

Here's a great article on SPL attendance by club.  Look at what happened to Celtic, Killie and Motherwell over the course of 10 years...just crazy how far attendance has dropped off.

Scottish football needs Rangers, Hearts and Hibs back so badly.  Hell, even Dunfermline they need back.

I would have liked the article to also chart the ten Championship clubs, which included Hearts, Hibs & Rangers in 2014/15.  As I noted above, only 7 clubs averaged home crowds above 5k this past season.  You really have to question the league structure, when 8 of 12 Prem clubs drew under 5K, and especially question the need for 4 divisions, when the bottom 2 tiers can't average 1,000 fans.

Perhaps it's time to bite the bullet, and re-structure into two 10-team leagues, dropping the bottom 22 into regional leagues.  Have Fall & Spring seasons, with 18 games each, so there are two champions annually, with a Grand Final at the end of Spring May for another trophy.

If the current problems continue, could the entire structure collapse?  Where would the Glasgow & Edinburgh clubs wind up?  England?

No idea what would work. Here's what I do know: Dunfermline in the third division outdrew half of the SPL this weekend. With the a crowd just north of 4k.

Both Rangers and Hibs comfortably outdrew most of the SPL this weekend.

Until those three clubs are back, attendance is gonna be shit. Even with Hearts pulling 15k crowds and Aberdeen remaining consistent at 13k ish. These new and small clubs have no appeal at all. Even if they are growing a bit, Hamilton and Inverness and Ross County just have no appeal and probably hurt the financial profile of the league.

Rangers should be promoted this year, Hibs will likely end up in the playoff. Dunfermline should steamroll the third division. Best thing that could happen to the league would be for some of the smaller clubs to lose that playoff

And Celtic crash out of the CL before the group stages...again...to a team from Finland.  With no incentive to spend to win the league, Celtic's European ambition has flatlined.  It's sad.
