Been watching the Scottish feed. Absolutely love the commentary. The analyst can say enough positive things about the US. Tons of really great tidbits of tactical nuance. Perhaps the best description of what Klinsman is trying to do, how the formation works. If anyone is interested:

The exchanging in the midfield has been extraordinary. Torres has been absolutely outstanding. LD is playing in a fantastic role for him, able to run at the defense at will. Boyd has been very impressive, very smart. Now if he finishes we can bring Jozy on as a sub.

I think Klinnsmann has figured out how to use Landon.

I wish Landon played for my MLS team so he could score goals like that...

What really amazes me is the crowd at Jacksonville.

I went there back in the late 90's (about this time of year) and the stadium was nearly empty.

Now look at it.

USA 5 - 1 Scotland.

US goalkeeper Tim Howard subs out, and the Scottish commentator says "You almost don't have replace him"!

Classic.

I assume there aren't any two MLS teams as far apart in talent as the US and Scotland evidently are. But it's hard not to wonder where this guy has been the Gs' whole season. Do the Gs have to people to allow Donovan to play the same role? Or is that just not the way Arena Ball is played? I sure hope Il Bruce is watching this game, in any event.

Glad we won, but the Scots are terrible.

I was excited to watch, it was fun.

It's all relative. In a pre-1998 WC warmup, we played Scotland and were damn lucky to have tied them nil-nil.

The US has just improved that much.

Just wait 'til they get a load of us at the Olympics!

Part of it is Arena ball. When you are a wide player in the 4-4-2 you have to take care of your defensive responsibilities first. The blocks of four don't work with three players.

Klinsmann's system is based upon triangles that can rotate and exchange. If LD goes forward he has cover. As long as he recovers as fast as he can the attacks behind him will be stood up and the middle contained until he returns. So he can go as far forward as he wants, as far in as he wants because the system is set up to cover him.

Same goes for Dolo and Johnson (who was excellent tonight). You'll notice there were times when LD was defending at his own goal line. That is because Dolo, Bradley, Jones, etc. had made runs and he was responsible to cover for them. Even when they recover he keeps the responsibility if his player has the ball or is one pass away. When the opponent passes back the whole team moves up and players revert their base positions. Here's the formation spread out to illustrate the triangles

------------------Howard---------------------
-----------Cameron----Boca-----------------
Dolo----------------------------------Johnson
------------------Edu--------------------------
------Jones--------------Bradley------------
LD-------------------------------------Torres
------------------Boyd-----------------------

------------------Howard---------------------
-----------Cameron----Boca-----------------
Dolo----------------------------------Johnson
------------------Edu--------------------------
------Jones--------------Bradley------------
LD-------------------------------------Torres
------------------Boyd-----------------------

------------------Howard---------------------
-----------Cameron----Boca-----------------
Dolo----------------------------------Johnson
------------------Edu--------------------------
------Jones--------------Bradley------------
LD-------------------------------------Torres
------------------Boyd-----------------------

------------------Howard---------------------
-----------Cameron----Boca-----------------
Dolo----------------------------------Johnson
------------------Edu--------------------------
------Jones--------------Bradley------------
LD-------------------------------------Torres
------------------Boyd-----------------------

All these combinations rotated DEFENSIVELY when the US applied pressure, as well as offensively when they attacked. It gives the players the freedom from specific jobs in support of an overall style of play. It works as long as you can apply pressure. It worked against Scotland with no Fletcher and a few others. Will be interesting to see against Brazil. It can result in matchup problems if you don't get pressure on the ball.

Edu, Boca and Cameron were the only players of the starters who didn't perform exceptionally well. Edu didn't pass very well and Cameron and Boca still need to coordinate better and sort out marking on crosses better. Cameron still look like a noobie at centerback, but I really like a lot of things about his game.

EDIT: Klinsi will use a 4-4-2 with a diamond or a bucket, but he still wants exchanging and rotation. It's a significant stylistic difference from Arena ball in which players move vertically up and back.

Why you gotta be like that Landon???

Only got to see 2nd half on poor feed on my phone, but I am happy that LD found his comfort zone.

I'm actually hopeful that we have some capable guys on the bench.

Please tell me that Scotland isn't the Cuba of the UK.

Definitely not, especially with Fletcher and that other guy who's really good...is it Morrison? :)
