There will still be a Hex, but the participants are determined by the top six in the FIFA rankings (currently Mexico, US, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras and El Salvador). The Nations League will go a long way toward determining the bottom 3 of the Hex.

The top three finishers qualify for Qatar and the fourth place finisher plays ... (see below)

The 29 remaining members of the confederation play in eight groups. The 8 group winners are drawn into home and away knockout rounds with quarterfinals, semis and a final.

The winner from the Group of 29 plays home and away with the fourth place finisher from the Hex. The winner of that plays home and away with a team from another confederation and, if they win that, they qualify for the World Cup.

The good thing I see about all this is that the lesser confederations now have a number of meaningful games being played almost every year. Prior to now, they would cobble together a team to train and play a home and away World Cup qualifier and then sit around until the next qualifying cycle. It will be easier to recruit players to the teams and, hopefully, will strengthen the overall quality of the confederation.

"They better keep playing that RB Arena update because that unbuilt stadium is the only positive thing about this soft-drink-selling, coached-by-a-dumbass, trading-good-players-for-shit, hopeless, retarded, club." - MetroFanatic

"It was always six weeks away. Every month, [Nick Sakiewicz] would say, we're six weeks away from the stadium. It's been the longest six weeks of my life." - Mike Petke

"I think every country can learn everything about each other. If the whole world can be together, it can be good." - Mathias Jorgensen

"I want to give you lots of titles for your happiness. Lots of hugs.” - Fabio

More games for weaker countries is great, but deciding the Hex participants based on FIFA rankings seems dumb.

Anything involving fifa rankings is dumb, like Poland gaming the system before the last wc in order to be in pot 1 and then bombing out of the group stage (they were somehow ranked 6th in the last fifs ranking before Russia 2018)

I've posted this a thousand other places, but the Nations League fits perfectly into the direct Hex qualification scheme. Give the 4 League A group winners a spot in the Hex, and have the 4 runners-up play home-and-away playoffs at the same time as the Nations League finals to determine the last 2 spots.

If this had been announced before Nations League qualifiers, even better.

Anything is better than using FIFA Rankings.

New improved & revised format!

USMNT will have to play at least 14 games.
Canada will have to play 10 just to reach Round 3.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.
