He should have elbowed someone hard enough to break their face since that will only get you a "formal warning"
If you scan YouTube looking for Bradley Wright-Phillips, youll find numerous goal compilations, a few interviews and, eventually, an excerpt from the grime mixtape series Lord of the Mics.

Is this the same slur that tens of thousands of Mexico fans shout on every opponent goal kick, without sanction?
Will the USMNT walk off the field at MetLife on 9/6?
Not the smartest of things for Mikey to do with the way people take the meaning of that word.

I love Petke but he isn't a victim here. I think firing him is debatable, but I can't really be mad at RSL for it. I agree that Petke shouldn't be banished for all time, I haven't read anyone saying that, but firing a public facing employee for using slurs in the workplace seems to be a pretty standard reaction. What would happen if you called someone that in your workplace?

Rats get fat, good men die.
Of course, but if the word said was puto, I doubt he used it as a homophobic slur. After all, Mexico will not even admit that it is.

I agree that I highly doubt he intended it to be homophobic, but how he picks and chooses his words should be held to a higher standard than a bunch of fans in attendance.
There are two other aspects to this situation that people aren't discussing.
First, it's being reported that he followed the refs down the tunnel and continued to yell, "puto" at them. Then, he wrote "puto" on something and either delivered it himself, or had it delivered, to the referee locker room. He might have survived this if it was just something he said once on the pitch.
And second, RSL played and looked really good since he's been banned from the team. If they went 0-3 while he was gone, the outcome might have been different.
