I know it is early, but they just released the official mascot picture today, it's an Fuleco the Armadillo:

Fuleco comes from the Portuguese words ''futebol'' (football) and ''ecologia'' (ecology). FIFA says it ''seamlessly represents the way in which the FIFA World Cup can combine the two to encourage people to behave in an environmentally friendly way.''

Are armadillo's common in Brazil?

Will they have their stadiums ready? Yes, according to FIFA, but maybe not the infrastructure.

"In one unnamed city there are 17,000 hotel bedrooms and a 45,000 capacity stadium [for the World Cup],"

This was the case in South Africa too. I spent a whole month searching for rooms. I ended up creating a hotel spreadsheet that was way too big for a fun trip. I think all but one of our accommodations were in guesthouses (mix between a motel and a B&B). The fucking places were freezing at night. I slept with a jacket a couple nights and had at least three blankets on me. This one place had some shitty portable heater that would only work for ten minutes. It had a big propane tank on it. Totally safe stuff.

This will be the case for several cities in Brazil. They want to be fair by giving shitty cities matches and the fans pay the price. In Africa we also ended up flying some budget airline to Durban. Good thing you never hear of planes crashing in Africa.

I'm not sure how this will all work out yet.

The first lottery is normally in December (like next week), but it is slated for Q1 next year. This stuff comes around fast.

And didn't that fucking propane tank go out one night and we woke up in an ice box. I remember I slept next to that heated wall plate one night.

I think it was called Mango Air.

The guy is an idiot, don't get me wrong.

All he was admitting to was something we all know very well. The headline isn't his exact words. In any case, he more so talking about how great it would be to live here and get to travel to the away games etc.

As I don't know where I'll be living next summer, I checked on flights from PDX, LAX and Frankfurt, Germany to Brazil. For some fucked up reason flights from Europe are $300-400 cheaper. How the hell is that possible? Plus, you wont be stuck in one of our sweet 1974 airplanes.

My wife's friend is from Brazil and says we have a place to stay for the Cup. She also says she knows where to go to avoid being murdered. So, there you go.

There's clearly no question it's worked for her so far.

Was looking forward to visiting Brazil for the WC - but what are the odds that the world cup makes a last minute move to the US?

it would certainly be cheaper and much easier (fucking Manous in the middle of the amazon, really?!) getting around stateside anyway.

I suppose not getting mugged in the street or in a hotel/hovel is another plus side too..

I'm skipping the 2014 WC.  Although going to Brazil for a WC does sound awesome, I'm planning on going to the Rugby World Cup in 2015 instead.

Wish I had the money to do both, but I don't.

Will be going to the WC Qualifier in Columbus though.

Huge surprise, FIFA wants to change 2022 Qatar to a winter cup.  I guess all of those bribes blinded them to reality and now they are finally starting to think about how bad it could be.

Qatar has a winter?  You really do learn something new every day.

WC in 2014 and Olympics in 2016 could bankrupt Brazil. The emerging market economies are not growing as fast as they were a few years ago and any forward growth will be sluggish. Brazil will need to pick one event to host and be happy with that. I am for the US taking over and hosting in 2014. Infrastructure is already in place and copius stadiums already built and ready to host. Final could be at SF 49ers new stadium. Brazil can then focus on Olympics and hosting WC in 2026. It's just lunacy that Brazil is trying to host two major events in a two year timespan. It could really decimate the economy.
