#1341661 Stadium updates

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 01 March 2019 - 08:26 AM

The grass behind the goal near the South Ward always dies by the end of the season. It's not a great look. To replace it with turf is just fine for me. Focus their energy on the playing field. Who cares about the sides. By mid-summer the color of the grass will be rich and full, matching the color of the turf and nobody will notice.

#1281176 Gordie Howe Hat Trick (Goal-Assist-Red Card)

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 10 June 2016 - 09:16 AM

(RIP Gordie Howe)

Far as I know, Thierry Henry is the only RBNY player to score a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" in a game. He earned a Goal, Assist, and a Red Card against Portland in 2011.

Has any other NY player earned this feat?

#1271239 Mike V

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 03 November 2015 - 06:28 PM

When I started coming to games in 2010, Mike V's "Car Wash" yell was a piece of the atmosphere I fell in love with. When I started selling my T-shirts in 2011, he was one of the first to commit to buying one.

I want to yell his "Car Wash" howl on Sunday, even if that's impolite.

Maybe if I do it loud enough, he just might hear it somewhere in that black ether…

#1265846 Results Watch

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 16 August 2015 - 11:11 AM

I haven't updated it for this week yet, but my goals-per-game result predictor doesn't see us losing a game the rest of the season—eventually winning the shield. That's not my bias, we're that good at home, pretty good on the road, and we don't have as tough a remaining schedule as some other teams do.

It's not logical, just mathematical.

#1263819 2016: with Austrian Austerity, who gets a raise?

Taxi can and should make a jump to a big league (and a bigger salary) in January if he wants to.

And frankly, I wouldn't begrudge him. New York is just going to be a stop on a long, fantastic career for him.

#1251820 Total Games: Metro vs. Red Bulls

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 13 April 2015 - 03:04 PM

MetroFanaticDan might have to confirm my figures on this, but as of this weekend's draw at DC, "New York Red Bulls/Red Bull New York" have played 15 fewer competitive matches than "NY/NJ MetroStars/MetroStars"

Metro: 352 total

MLS Regular Season: 306

MLS Playoffs: 19

US Open Cup: 21

International (Mecronorte): 6

Red Bulls: 337 total

MLS Regular Season: 292

MLS Playoffs: 22

US Open Cup: 17

International (CCL): 6

Assuming that count is right, sometime in July, depending on how the Open Cup goes, the franchise will have played the majority of its competitive matches as "Red Bulls."

Make of that what you will. The facts are the facts.

Nice to know that every time the team wins this year, a significant portion of the fanbase will take the opportunity to rub it in the faces of the pro-Petke, anti-RB crowd.

As my dad used to say "No wonder you've never won a championship."

#1249679 Protest ideas?

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 21 March 2015 - 06:27 PM

I had thought about making these scarves earlier in the year, but after the town hall and people started to… accept… Jesse, I didn't think the iron was hot enough to strike. I still bet I could sell 100, but it would take the full season to do. And being that I'll only be at 4-5 games this season anyway, it doesn't seem worth it.

That said, if someone does want to front the cash to have them printed up, I'll forward you the Illustrator file and you can design them yourself. I was in disccsions with Ruffneck Scarves. I even got a quote from them.

#1245812 The emergence of Leipzig is a threat to Salzburg (and us as well?)

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 23 February 2015 - 09:04 PM

What we need is a good old fashion scandal.

The only scandal I can think of is if people in "Red Bulls" jerseys (be they in New York, Salzburg or elsewhere) developed such a horrible reputation that it began to reflect poorly on the brand. Something of a cross between Eastern Bloc Ultras and The Bloods. If ESPN ran clips on SportsCenter every week of Red Bull-clad hooligans fighting opposing fans in the street, invading pitches, and engaging in other foolishness, it might be an association that RB GmbH would not want with the brand.

That said, Red Bull sponsors MMA events, so maybe they'd be OK with rampant hooliganism.

#1240244 The first ten games

Posted by BillFromAstoria on 17 January 2015 - 09:37 PM

Unscientific guesses here

8-Mar —@ Sporting KC   LOSS

22-Mar — vs. D.C. United   DRAW

28-Mar — @ Columbus   DRAW

4-Apr — vs. Montreal   WIN

11-Apr — @ D.C. United  LOSS

17-Apr — vs.  San Jose  WIN

26-Apr — vs.  LA Galaxy  LOSS

2-May — @ New England   LOSS

10-May — vs. New York City  WIN

15-May — @ FC Dallas  DRAW

3-4-3 to start the year.

We started slow in 2013 (4-4-2) and 2014 (3-2-5) and we still had great seasons. The games against Montreal and San Jose should be stone cold wins. Might even steal a point against LA, as they, too, tend to start slow. DC hasn't really done much to re-build and they'll be a bit congested due to CCL should they progress. New England away is always a shitshow. Who knows what NYCFC will look like.
