However, his laissez faire attitude rubs me the wrong way. Not sure Americans understand a coach who is of that mindset.
"Obviously, I want to make a living (in soccer), to say the least," he said. "There's so much you can accomplish in the soccer world, and right now I'm focused on having a good season with the Red Bulls. Ultimately, our goal is to win the MLS Cup, and I see no reason why we can't." - #4 Tyler Adams

I read the "'I can't take this serious" quote as refering to the pressure of being fired, not coaching NYRB (then again, this is metrofantic)I can imagine the "'I can't take this serious" quote will get jumped on here, more than Solli's "He's very dedicated...His hunger for winning games and the way he tries to prepare himself and also the way we do the breakdown on each opponent, he's definitely the most professional [coach] I've ever been involved with. His messages are very clear, but of course you always have your own options."
Always unfair to ask a current player about their coach. Both Keel & Solli give an overly enthusiastic response which contrast with Backes own laid back answers.
Not realy an interview with hard hitting questions, more a Hans Backe ramble about life and football.
Things I did not know about Backe:
He'll oversee his stable of 18 race horses in Kentucky, his beloved trotters. He'll continue to suffer along with the Cincinnati Bengals, as he has for 22 years. He'll watch hockey. He'll play golf. He'll keep going to indie rock concerts; he has tickets to go see The Vaccines next month

Backe has found American players to be especially malleable. "They are so willing to learn and they adapt very quick," he says. "I was so surprised. They're intelligent guys. They're hungry guys. They're a little more committed than European players."
How does he know?

Of the 26 players on the team right now, only 12 are American, if you count Agudelo:Half our squad are Ameican players.
Agudelo, Barklage, Borrajo, Cooper, Hertzog, Keel, Lade, Maduro, McCarty, Meara, Ruthven, Vuolo.
However, of those 12, only Agudelo, Cooper, Keel, McCarty and Meara have appeared in a game this year. So that's 5 out of 14 players who've played. Hardly half.

No, I think people realize he was talking about not worrying about his job status. I prefer to jump on Backe for his actions, like not travelling to Cup matches, which leaves very little room for misinterpretation.

a) i don't know why anyone wouldn't consider Agudelo americanOf the 26 players on the team right now, only 12 are American, if you count Agudelo:

The Keel takeaway definitely points a shining light on Backe.
However, his laissez faire attitude rubs me the wrong way. Not sure Americans understand a coach who is of that mindset.
Anyone who claims that Backe is incapable of doing anything positive is ignorant. That being said, this is New York, and the inability to do anything significant with some of the highest paid teams in MLS history combined with the Open Cup disaster is not going to be forgiven because he made Stephen Keel into a decent defender.
