I'm torn because after his killer 2013 season, he kind of sucked and has been an asshole in comments about the team ever since.  Lloyd Sam had an incredible 2015 season, but I don't think I'd give it to him for that season alone.

There's something special about the 13 shield though.

Sam is gonna make it, he part of the rare 20-20 club, Team of the Decade 2006-2015, and big part of 2 Shields.

Right, but if he just had 2015 and then a super average 2016 followed by a bunch of comments about how he made the fanbase what it is today, I'd be against him getting it.

If you scan YouTube looking for Bradley Wright-Phillips, youll find numerous goal compilations, a few interviews and, eventually, an excerpt from the grime mixtape series Lord of the Mics.

i think i still have the sign that Serg ripped out of his hand.

best part about RBNY U23s and FC Motown was that we spotted Billy in the crowd.

HA.

Wasn't it Footix who did that or am I thinking of a different episode? I remember Serg going after the dipshit and then Sandy goes over to Pat and tries to talk sense to him to no avail.
Let's Go Buffalo!!!

The guy clearly just loves soccer. If he's happy then good for him.

If by "just loves soccer" you mean loves his own image and chases dollars then yes, spot on.

I remember when he came over and some Everton fan/blogger was on Seeing Red and talked about how Cahill would make sure Marquez shaped up. That's the level of esteem in which some held Tim Cahill.

Since, he's just chased cash. It's more than a little sad for everyone involved.

Except for his bank account. Guy has 20 years to earn good money in his career, and he's taking advantage.

Shaming players for trying to earn money has to be one of the weirdest things that sports fans do.

His bank account was was already fat when he spent the 2014 season pouting over not getting an astronomical pay raise.

Since leaving Everton, he's been jumping from league willing to spend on big name foreign players to league willing to spend on big name foreign players, playing like shit, then quitting.

At his lowest, he crawled back home to Australia and signed in the A-League, which he shit-talked for years, only to quit on the only owner willing or able to meet his at-that-point-absurd salary demands after getting benched.

Cahill cultivated a reputation as a team-first, bleed-for-the-shirt kind of player. It was all for show, as six years of shitting all over that reputation by selling mailed-in performances to the highest bidder demonstrate. And THAT'S where my criticism comes from. It's sad for everybody involved, from the fans that bought into it to the teams employing him. But it's probably saddest of all for Cahill himself, since he doesn't need the money or fame and comes off as a duplicitous, entitled ass.

Plenty of guys go out on their shield, but not many do so in such a blatantly mercenary way.

A dark place. You seem bitter.
I could see this about Marquez. Not Cahill.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Same here. PPL told me he was that kind of player. Was def weird seeing him do a 180.

Surely, there's a line in there somewhere, right?

You sure he's not just calling for a timeout?  Guy's so old he probably just needed a breather.

Who are you to say he doesn't need the money? I'm sure there are plenty of people in the world who'd look at you and say you've already got enough too, does that mean you shouldn't accept a better paycheck? Tim Cahill doesn't owe us or anybody else anything just cause he was a club legend at Everton, and certainly not cause you've got some overly romanticized notion that athlete's owe fans their loyalty above all else. If he wants to use his last years as a pro to secure his family's future, sure that might suck for the 2014 Red Bulls, but a travesty to the sport itself? C'mon...

You're missing the point. It's not my "overly romanticized notion" about what athletes owe fans. He cultivated that reputation himself for years and is now doing seemingly everything in his power to savage that reputation.

I'm literally only judging him by his own criteria.

I'm willing to concede that he actually might need the money, fine. But voiding contracts once he gets benched doesn't suggest that's the case at all.

Finally, it didn't even suck for the 2014 Red Bulls. They made the conference finals that year. No trophy, but after the Shield the year prior and a new regime in charge it started to feel like we were building momentum toward something really good, which is more than we've ever had.
