#1418796 Metro - Crew Game Thread

Posted by iced1776 on Today, 08:41 AM

Just can't wrap my head around what Struber was thinking leaving two subs on the bench and making no changes after the 78th minute. The midfield was gassed and there were plenty of options on the bench.

imo Struber needs to sub out one or both of the attacking mids after 75 min. they were both wiped and we couldn't keep the ball up field. I think that goes a long way to avoiding that sort of late game onslaught.

#1418656 The return of... Fabio?

Comparing Fletcher to Fabio is a little unfair. Fabio had a goal or assist every 157 minutes. Fletcher had a goal or assist every 'divide by zero error'

We dont have to be beggars, Red Bull should be held to a higher standard. Just because some would settle for Fabio doesnt make it palatable or acceptable.

You don't think having him as a reasonably priced backup is palatable or acceptable? Seems a little extreme he wasn't an awful player.

#1418594 Will Casseres be sold?

Anyone else concerned CCJ's problem is pretty serious? Infections can be no joke, this is extremely uncommon and the fact that details are so slow to come through makes me worried he's out for a long while.

I was going to say the biggest contributor is just fatigue but a lingering injury makes just as much sense. I'd much rather rest him the next two games and have him fresh for the playoffs, we're at very little risk of losing a home game seed.

Part of it I think is also that teams have learned about him a little bit more. Defenders do not try to tackle him on the dribble anymore, they give him a little bit of space. He is still an effective dribbler, but not leaving guys in the dust or racking up yellow cards like he was the first few games.

I think everyone knew scoring bangers from 20 yards out wasn't sustainable long term.

#1418359 Klimala is a horrible finisher

Posted by iced1776 on 19 September 2022 - 08:49 PM

Montreal did such a smart move brining in Kei Kamara. teams gave up on him since he is 38. he accepted his role as a back up forward and  scored 8 goals and 7 assists.

this is the type of band aid move we needed to do just in case klimala failed. its okay to give kids and high potential guy chances but you also need to have a vet to help guide the ship when things get rough. now, we are just suffering.

This is the league minimum vet signing I would have been totally down for.

#1418355 Winter transfer window

Posted by iced1776 on 19 September 2022 - 08:25 PM

From your mouth to Herr Schneider's ears! No reason to replace Long when he leaves this offseason. No reason to replace Morgan or Casseres either, we have players ready to step up!

Good thing about Long's replacement is that he just needs to be the #3 behind two great CBs still on the roster.

We've been signing like, 18 guys per winter to compliment the 0 guys per summer. I'm not going to argue the logic behind it, but safe to assume we'll see some moves this winter.

#1418278 Some academy players choose to leave

Posted by iced1776 on 17 September 2022 - 06:21 PM

The whole argument that playing in europe will maximize your chances of being a pro is not true.

Elf you are ignoring one point several people have tried to make. It's not just simply setting a goal of "being a pro player". Some kids want to get to the highest level of competition as possible, as early in their career as possible. They don't just want regular playing time on a meager $100k MLS contract at 22, they want to be signing huge contracts at huge clubs at 22.

And if that is your goal, you are actually going to argue that MLS makes that more plausible than a place like Dortmund? You think they'll climb the ranks to a Champions League club faster by joining the Red Bulls academy?

They know there is risk because it's a harder path. You have acknowledged that by pointing out players who haven't hit their expected ceiling, but you have not acknowledged the higher reward if they do end up impressing at a prestigious academy.

Struber says Klimala, Amaya, and Ngoma are scratches against NYCFC, everyone else is ready.

Ngoma he says is done for the season, they are being extra cautious with his health which seems to be a trend among their really young guys.

I always forget how much more exciting neutral games become when you have even the slightest bit of playoff stake in them.

#1418003 The forwards better start scoring

Posted by iced1776 on 13 September 2022 - 09:28 AM

Wow. That's an outlier and them some. Imagine where we'd be with 7 more goals.

Just to hammer home how much of an outlier that is. The gap between NYRB and SKC is the same as SKC and the next 18 teams

That's absurd. Klimala's xG last year seems to obviously disprove that.

This year isn't much better. I just grouped "goals to xG" by team and filtered to only strikers. Not great!

When is the last time we got a goal from a forward from the run of play?

11 games ago, Barlow against Austin.

Before that, Klimala in the Open Cup against Charlotte 21 games ago.

One of the wildest takes I've seen on Twitter, from at least one person who actually contributes to sites covering the league, is that this is 100% on Struber's tactics and no striker could conceivably be expected to score even as much as ours have.

Struber doesn't make things easy for his strikers to score, but he doesn't make it this hard. There is a very, very clear talent issue here.

#1417973 Will Barlow play in every game?

Posted by iced1776 on 12 September 2022 - 03:49 PM

He signed a new deal, he is no longer on his entry-level MLS contract. Simlarly, when both White and Muyl signed their 2nd contract, they earned just north of 200k, so it seems like it's the standard rate for your avg 2nd MLS contract. It's not like we're paying heavy above market for him, but I do see that it might be better to have an HG or a RB2 promoted guy in that defensive fwd position, cuz a HG/reserve team promoted guy won't count against the cap since he'd be in slot 21-30 on the Supplemental roster.

There's also the chance a young guy can turn out to be a good defensive AND offensive forward. We know by now that's not in the cards for Barlow.
