the 3 center back formation grants our outside backs more liberty to get up the field.  The 2nd goal was a direct result of this - pendant had the liberty to get all the way upfield and put in a perfect cross to Royer.

Nowhere near enough of these type of chances. True, Royer made a world class finish, but Pendant is not a great offensive player. And we gave up a lot of possession too. It just felt midfield was weak, and we were facing one of the worst teams in MLS too. Thanks to Meara had a clean sheet, but would much rather see a competent player in the attacking third (Mines looked good whenever he came on and still only 20) than Nealis as a 3d CB. Duncan and Pendant (or Egbo I thought look decent when he got a start) can still make their runs with Long and Parker in the back.

Pendant is not a great offensive player.

Too early to say that with any confidence. Sure, he's unlikely to reach Taxi's level, but he did put in a perfect cross on the Royer goal.  Agreed, that if we stick with three CBs, he's got to push forward more.  Let's give him some time to figure it out.

Get the outside backs forward, great in theory. Need more moments like Pendant combing with Kaku and making a run behind the back line.

Unfortunately, both he and Duncan are sometimes too tentative going forward. Pendant checks back to the CBs or pumps aimless long balls too often, Duncan has the speed but not the ability to take on defenders.

Of course that could also be the function of playing with too many players who are too static to be consistent options in the attacking third.

Too often they looked like they were playing 5 in the back, not 3.  Was that Carnell's instructions or was it the wingbacks.  If we stick with this formation, they need to play more like midfielders than defenders for a larger portion of the match.

agree to early. Egbo seems a little more attack minded but Pendant has skill so lets see what happens.

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

I'm leaning towards Pendant not being great with the ball either.  And I know he got the assist on the Royer goal but I'm not willing to believe he was trying to put the ball there.  THat was more a great play by Royer and DC should have handled that better.  There was a ton of bad passes that Pendant made in that game.

That said, I'm a fan of Pendant because I'm a believer that you have to be a defender first as a fullback and he appears very natural with defending.

Others have told me they were mostly playing 3.
I dont know if anyone would have stats on that.

We are good enough to beat the best teams, and bad enough to lose to the worst teams.

Duncan & Pendant were definitely playing further up the pitch than the CBs, I just thought they weren't involved in the attack enough.

Passing maps back this up, at least for Pendant. His assist to Royer was the only cross he played all game. I'm not sure exactly what Carnell had in mind but with 2 wingbacks I figure you'd expect them to get to the opposing touchline pretty often.

Duncan did a little better getting upfield but didn't find many guys with his crosses.

Given their lack of involvement it felt there there were definitely 5 defenders with weak midfield.
