I dont disagree but I am basically forced to put my entire trust in the system and coaching philosophy of Struber. His apparent evaluation of our player needs does not match mine at all, so I just have to assume he magically knows what he is doing. Its not great.

Yeah, but I'd rather a plan. Say what you will about the tenents of national socialism...

#1379593 Shameful bid for Eric Kahl

Garbage club things.

Maybe - but I'd rather a swing and a miss at $600k, then we seal the deal at $2MM and he's a bust.

#1379588 Shameful bid for Eric Kahl

Posted by 67% Class on 19 February 2021 - 11:24 AM

The team that owns him says that's what he's worth, and if they aren't willing to sell for less, then that's all that matters.

Sure, but doesn't mean they are correct. Transfermarket (for what its worth) lists Kahl at $1MM - much closer to the RB reported bid of $600k than the $2.4MM AIK wants. The selling model (the only model that we can use) requires that you sell players on for larger transfer fees.

If Haksa was sold a week later for $5MM, then I'd say RB did have a lowball offer. He wasn't so its tough to say.

RB way overpaid for Jorgenson ($2MM), Kaku ($6MM), and Veron ($2MM) - I dont think it is bad that Thelwell places a valuation on player and is ok walking away from the table.

Also, I think its more "shameful" on AIK that it describes a bid as shameful than RB making a bid at $600k.

No.  Fabio will finally put us over the top with the Brazilians.  We need to double-down on the ethnic pandering.  We will soon reach a tipping point when the Brazilians flood RBA in droves.  Then we will sign a washed up former Mexican national team and the Mexicans will embrace us!

My comment regarding Fabio was really a throw away comment, but my code compels me to defend it!!

I was not trying to say acquire players based on nationality, I was more saying that as you cant market a "brand" like red bull. No one cares about soda.  The marketing dept. should be marketing players and have those players go to where people congregate (post-covid, obviously). I think the only route to generating fan interest is winning and having "likable" players who fans route for.

Fabio could have been from anywhere, and I think he would be a good pick up. He happens to be Brazilian and happens to be set to play in Ironbound/Harrison, which has one of the largest Brazilian populations in the US. Him being Brazilian is not a reason to pick him up, but him being Brazilian is a reason he should be involved in marketing to the nearby Brazilian community (assuming he is good).

Would have thought this would have been announced - hope no issues.

Maybe PR-wise they are waiting to pair this with some negative news?

because Kaku at minimum was bringing the club $3mm and now we may get 0.  i would think that materially impacts the transfer budget for a team that usually spends what they receive.

As long as RB thinks Kaku's claim has no standing (which sounds like they do), then not bringing a player in would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

thats not how financial fair play works. Financial fair play just limits clubs from excessive spending with out equal sales in a similar period of time. Mls clubs will never be burden by financial fair play as they dont spend big enough. So anything outside of the GAM could go right into the owners pocket and doesnt have any mandate on the use so a transfer to Leipzig for 3 mil or a transfer to Bayern for 10mil makes no difference because the 1 mil gam is maxed either way

But for Leipzig it does matter.

#1379142 Will (when) we sign new players?

Posted by 67% Class on 09 February 2021 - 06:50 PM

THEY DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT WINNING.

Coach them up and ship them out. Since Adams that has been their focus.

I think its both... You are correct that selling is priority #1, but that's true of most teams in the world. Priority #1B is winning.

#1379073 New jersey for 2021

Posted by 67% Class on 09 February 2021 - 09:17 AM

Symbolic meaning per the future press release. Little leader lines will point out each design feature:

  • Three red stripes adorn the shoulders, placed to signify the three primary focuses of the Red Bull organization - Leipzig, F1, and extreme sports.
  • The three red stripes were also placed on shoulders to indicate the ceiling of $3MM that RBS and RBL will pay for RBNY young talent - its symbolizes Dieter sneaking up behind a 16 year old and placing his two warm mitts on their shoulders, while whispering "trust me..."
  • The checker board pattern calls to the mind the F1 wins Red Bull hopes to fund by selling young soccer talent from NY.
  • The checker board pattern also sort of looks like a basket weave, which symbolizes either unity or baskets of cash - maybe both?
  • Or maybe the checkerboard can also be used for a new game we created called "X-Chess" where the board is replaced with a red bull shirt and the chess pieces are replaced by Red Bull soda cans... its extreme!!! When you lose a piece, you have to chug that can!
  • As a nod to hardcore fans, we have placed groupings of red bulls - on chest, on stomach, on back - to call to mind the little known fact that the team is owned by a soda company called "Red Bull".

I'm not saying "come see the former star that is millionaire Juninho" will work, I'm saying "oh, there's a guy at the bar I go to who plays for the soccer team that plays across the river, speaks the same language as me, and is also trying to provide for his family - maybe I'll check out a game to see him play"

..and just thinking out loud, really.

I think its a high upside pickup. Seems like a better fit in playing style than some other acquisitions from SA in prior years.  I am excited to see how all of these pieces fit together - we could have a turnover of 60-75% of the starters on the roster for 2021 and a full preseason to develop chemistry. If nothing else, it will be interesting.

Cart before horse, but if Fabio makes his place here, I hope RB marketing sets up some meet and greet events in the Ironbound.

#1379011 MLS CBA fight

Posted by 67% Class on 08 February 2021 - 07:35 AM

Given the steadily increasing value of an MLS franchise, probably nothing.

The people who own MLS teams aren't looking at year-to-year finances. A $25 million negative balance in a year is completely offset by a $25 million increase in franchise value.

Again, they are crying poverty, and that's why these (MLS-initiated) CBA negotiations are happening. It is foolish to take anything the owners say at anything resembling face value.

To add, I don't even think they are really claiming poverty. Poverty would require immediate reduction in expenses in 2021. They want to reduce expenses 7 years down the road.

Not sure it will pan out, but I am very impressed with Thelwell Struber thus far... maybe 3-4 potential new starters, some development guys 1-2 and I'm still expecting more additions.

This is a real roster overhaul.
