Their coach didn't seem too interested.
"That's life." -Bruce Arena

"There's no easy games in The MLS." -Robbie Keane

This really bothers me, talking to Steve yesterday, he mentioned that the EPL fines teams for playing weakened squads. CONCACAF needs to do this to UNAM. Every single season it's the same thing in the CCL.

I understand the desire to see all teams field their top squads, but Monterrey pulled an MLS and mixed starters with benchwarmers and won 5-0 v. Herediano. I can only imagine the hurt they would have laid on Herediano with their First XI. Until other teams can put up more of a fight, and it's financially worth their time, they'll keep fielding weakened squads.

I wonder what will happen if more MLS teams win games in Mexico. Do you think pride will kick in and the Meji teams will ante up a bit?

He said, "Chinga tu fack yoo!"
Straight red after that.

I was suspended 3 ****ing games in a 2nd division waterpolo league in Spain for saying, "What the fuck was THAT?!" after some dude pulled my feet from behind on a 1 x 1 fastbreak and then proceeded to DUNK ME UNDERWATER right in front of the ref, no call. Fucker gave me a black eye, too. But the league heard "fuck" and figured it must be bad, so I was suspended.

Thing is that my buddies were there watching the game and were laughing hysterically the whole time. We went out afterwards and my friends were using my black eye to pick up girls. The ladies were all, "What did you do to the other guy?" My friends, "Nothing! And he got kicked out of the game! For receiving a black eye!"

At least my buddies came out on top. I went home alone.

Worst night ever.

Hit'em where it hurts then. Warn them. Warn them. Warn them. And if they don't shape up, suspend them from international competitions (including Copa Libertadores) -- CONCACAF has to award UNAM permission anyway.

Mexican teams treat this competition like MLS teams treat us open cup. Does it have to do with money? Is $1.5M too little? I'm not even considering TV money, which must be next to nothing.

I gathered these numbers from sort of reliable sources around bigsoccer. There is very little info, regarding CONCACAF prize money.
- USD 500K (paid by CONCACAF)
- USD 1M (paid by FIFA - simply for competing in the Club World Championship)
-Total 1.5M

SuperLiga paid the winner $1.0M

By Comparison:

CAF (Africa)
- USD 1.5M (paid by CAF)
- USD 1M (paid by FIFA)
Total: 2.5M

AFC (Asia)
- USD 1.8M (Paid by the AFC)
- USD 1M (paid by FIFA)
Total: 2.8M

Copa Libertadores
1M prize
2M sponsor prize
1M (paid by FIFA)
Total: 4.0M

...ooooh ooooooooh we are the riot squad...

For some reason, i thought this was a richer tournament. FIFA has to award more money to make it worthwhile. its not like they dont have the funds.

It doesn't look like FIFA is the problem. It looks as if CONCACAF doesn't ante up enough. No wonder given the paltry way the promote CCL and the corruption. Me thinks individuals are enjoying money that could be invested in growing the region.

There's no doubt. EVERY confederation pays more than the CONCACAF. If I recall correctly even Oceania awards a million. Frankly I always thought CONCACAF should adopt the UEFA model, pay the teams a prize amount for every win in the tournament. That will bring out the First XIs.

Pride has already kicked in for some teams.
The first year every Mexican team brought youth teams. Mexican teams won 3/4groups. Marathon of Honduras won the 4th group.

The second year they all brought mixtures, because Pachuca was in it and they go all out for International tourneys. They won all 4 groups.

Then last year MLS pride kicked in (except for the Galaxy) and they brought A squads. The Mexican's only won 2 groups. Cruz Azul ended up calling reinforcements since they hadn't used all 30 slots on their rosters. Monterrey actually took the tourney seriously. They didn't lose a single game, and won the tourney.

This year, Monterrey brought a similar mix. The MLS squads have used their First XI for the most part. Most telling about the progress it's not just the Mexican pride, Central American squads started buying Brazilians and Argentines, and some (like Motagua) started buying the better players from other CCL teams (they bought Pando from Municipal).

Seattle at Monterrey. 75th minute...

Monterrey came looking like they would win just by showing up. Still, Seattle is lucky to be ahead at this point.

Of the two Chris' calling the game, can Christopher Sullivan be any more passionless? Even though I understand a lot less, I'd watch on Galavision if the picture wasn't so crappy.

After all those years, now two Mexican teams have gone down in Mexico, and the weakest Mexican team hasn't played yet
