Twellman calling out lack of NYRB signings in off season

Taylor Twellman with STRONG words on @Extratime regarding #RBNY. "Hey, New York Red Bulls, you doing anything? Are you doing ANYTHING!? Is Chris Armas even alive!? So, to answer your question (on which club has the most to worry about), it's actually the New York Red Bulls.

I am STUNNED that this is where they are. I am stunned they haven't signed anyone for Chris Armas to actually use. You can't replace them (Robles, BWP, etc.) with USL II players, as good as John Wolyniec and that system and that club and what they've done. (Cont'd) #RBNY

Bradley Wright-Phillips "I prefer it at Red Bull Arena, but it was OK. I could imagine it being good for a baseball crowd.

Everyone pointed to BWP's injury last year as a big reason why we failed....Well OK, where are those goals coming from now???

We scored goals. White was much more prolific than anyone expected, Royer had a good season and we had everyone else on the roster chipping in.

Our problem was that we couldnt hold a lead and thats on the coach and GM.

The defense was largely the same cast. CCJ isnt Tyler Adams but as the season wore on it was clear he was good enough to shut down the center of the field. Against Philly he was probably our best player putting out fires late in the game and we STILL lost.

No additions were made to strengthen CM. Kaku is another Sasha. Great in attack, but not a defender. He either needs to be in a 5 man midfield or punished out wide.

Additionally we couldnt string three passes together to save our lives when we were up a goal.

These problems are coaching and GM related. IMO it had/had very little to do with BWP or our striker corp.

Yeah, BWP being hurt turned out to be not a huge deal because White was putting up numbers you aren't going to do much better than.  Plus Royer's great year.

The issue with the team is that overall we just didn't play well enough in other areas of the game.  Murillo was mostly awful, Taxi missed a bunch of games which resulted in Lade getting destroyed, and we didn't dominate play like we typically did before.  Resulted in more chances against and the defense was constantly tested.

Davis and Rza weren't good enough typically.  CCJ couldn't replace Adams but this team won before Adams was a real fixture.

Sims is good for a full season for sure.  I don't know that he can score much, but he'll help keep the ball in the opposing half and rack up some assists.

There's just zero reason to believe we're better.  Zero.  White can't possibly do a ton more than he did last year.  Every other player on the field is as good as they're ever going to be.  The lone exception being Casseres and his upside is limited in my opinion.

Hear me out: I think people maybe are putting too much focus on Chris Armas being a bad coach. Full disclosure: I think he's a bad coach.

BUT...I think we need to realize how good of a coach Jesse Marsch was. There is a reason he is killing it over in Salzburg and Champions League, and getting praise from Jurgen Klopp. Jesse Marsch got great success out of rosters that IMO were not THAT good. Seriously, does anybody think we really had the best roster on paper when we won those last 2 shields? I don't. But Marsch took teams that were near the basement in terms of salary and made them Shield Winners and title contenders. Remember when we bossed around Portland and NYCFC (USOC) with our reserves??? Marsch got the team to perform WAY better than the sum of their parts.

He was a big reason why this moneyball strategy worked. It is not going to work with an average coach, and especially not a bad coach like Armas is.

Last paragraph here nails it. Even if White continues his scoring rate, it's still not enough. They need to make significant additions to the starting lineup and RBII scrubs won't cut it.

Scrubs? come on

Agree we are not better.

Sims full year good and makes team better.

But they need:

- 2 more players in the ~20 range now (not 1-2 identifed and they can't close deal)

+ Tolkin to play lots of time at RB2 and get time at first team

+ someone to make the jump - Valot or Omir or someone else (I say this as a big fan of both of those players)

+ Brian White to stay at 2019 level (saying as a fan of him and thinking he will be  10+ goal player for us)

+ summer signings once they analyzed (re-analyzed) every player on the Globe and scout them (or re-scout them)

That would be ok.  Now - not good enough.

Better than what? He was on the team when we lost 3-0 to MTL, drew DC at home, lost to the Rapids at home....

Yes, I think this is something that has clouded the judgement of some of the more forgiving RBNY fans.

Jesse won with this roster, why cant Chris

I dont think Chris is a good manager regardless, but whoever the next guy is still wont be able to win shields with a mostly HG and RB2 promoted roster while the rest of the league is investing millions.

RB2 is a gift for RBNY, but they manage to squander it by making it more of a focal point in filling out the roster. Cheap depth, and sometimes you get a Tyler Adams or an Aaron Long.

This is an intelligent fanbase, we arent saying fuck those kids as much as we are saying give them some help and have a mix of HGs, RB2s, and high upside TAM/DP players that fit the criteria (19-24) and can be sold for a profit.

The problem with that is the earlier start to the season. If we sign someone after the 2nd week of February, we are waiting on a Visa and giving them 2 weeks to train with the team before March 1st.

I dont understand how every transfer window we hamstring ourselves by leaving things so late.

I know Jørgensen wasnt making an impact in the CCL last season, but he was just getting up to speed when we went up against Santos.

Jesse did not "win with this roster." We had Adam's and an in-form B-Dubs. That's a very different roster.

Marsch could win with just about any roster.

But outside of him, this roster just isn't good enough for any usual coach.

Yes. More Adams than BWP (because we did score lat year). But like I mentioned before...we bossed around teams using our reserve lineup.

Team just really is one difference maker from being potentially really good.

The 3 attackers in the midfield are good.  The only 2 potential spots to really ad a serious DP player are the number 9 spot (where White was already pretty good) or the 6.  I'd go with the striker position because you always need someone who can score with nothing happening.

We still don't have a true defensive mid, unless Casseres becomes that.

If doesn't, we're f-ed.
